Overview

The KidKraft Ainsley Play System is a residential outdoor playground designed for children aged 3 to 7, with a maximum capacity of 6 users and a weight limit of 110 lbs (50 kg) per child. This play system is constructed from high-quality, durable Cunninghamia Lanceolata wood, known for its light weight, excellent strength, and natural resistance to rot and bugs due to its porous fibers that absorb and evaporate moisture.

Function Description:

The Ainsley Play System provides a multi-activity play experience, including swings, a slide, and a climbing wall, integrated into a fort-like structure. It is intended for outdoor domestic use only and is not suitable for public areas such as multi-unit residences, schools, churches, nurseries, daycares, or parks. The system promotes physical activity, imaginative play, and social interaction among children.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Material: Cunninghamia Lanceolata wood (cypress family).
  • Maximum Vertical Fall Height: 6 feet (1.8 meters).
  • Capacity: 6 users maximum.
  • Age Range: 3 to 7 years.
  • Weight Limit: 110 lbs (50 kg) per child.
  • Obstacle-Free Safety Zone: A minimum area of 22'-3" L x 28' D x 13'-10" is required, and this zone must be covered with protective surfacing.
  • Assembly: Requires two-person assembly, with an estimated assembly time of 4-8 hours.
  • Hardware: Includes various bolts, screws, washers, T-nuts, and swing hangers.
  • Wood Dimensions: Various wood parts with dimensions such as 5/8" x 3-3/8" x 32-1/2", 1-1/2" x 5-3/8" x 69-1/2", 1-3/8" x 3-3/8" x 79-1/2", and 1" x 3-1/2" x 40-1/2".
  • Slide: Features a plastic slide component.
  • Climbing Wall: Includes climbing holds (5790524).
  • Swing Hangers: Designed to ensure proper swing motion and prevent premature failure.

Usage Features:

  • BILT® App Integration: Easy step-by-step 3D interactive instructions are available through the BILT® app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. This feature simplifies the assembly process.
  • Safety Zone: Requires a clear obstacle-free safety zone around the play system, free from obstructions like garages, fences, trees, sidewalks, and electrical wires.
  • Protective Surfacing: Mandates the installation of shock-absorbing protective surfacing (e.g., wood mulch/chips, engineered wood fiber, sand, pea gravel) to a minimum depth of 9 inches (23 cm) for equipment up to 8 feet (2.45 m) high, or 6 inches (16 cm) for equipment less than 4 feet (1.22 m) high. This surfacing must extend at least 6 feet (1.8 m) in all directions from the equipment. For to-fro swings, it must extend a distance equal to twice the height of the top bar in front and behind the swing.
  • Adult Supervision: Continuous adult supervision is required during use to prevent serious injuries.
  • Proper Attire: Children should wear well-fitting, full-foot enclosing footwear. Loose-fitting clothing, ponchos, hoods, scarves, capes, necklaces, items with draw-strings, cords, ties, bike/sport helmets, ropes, clotheslines, pet leashes, cables, or chains are prohibited during play to prevent strangulation.
  • Sitting Position: Children should be taught to sit with their full weight in the center of the swing seat to prevent erratic motion or falling.
  • Slide Use: Children should go down the slide feet first and not run up it.
  • Anchoring: The play set must be properly anchored to the ground to prevent tipping over. Stakes must be driven 10-1/2 inches (266.7 mm) into the ground, with caution exercised to avoid underground wiring, cables, or gas lines.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspections: Owners are responsible for regularly checking the play system for wear and tear.
  • Hardware:
    • Beginning of Play Season: Check metal parts for rust (sand and repaint with non-lead paint if found). Inspect and tighten all hardware, but do not overtighten on wood assemblies to prevent crushing or splintering. Check for sharp edges or protruding screw threads and add washers if needed.
    • Twice a Month During Play Season: Inspect hardware for tightness, ensuring it is firm but not crushing the wood. Check for sharp edges or protruding screw threads and add washers if needed.
    • Swing Hangers: Check for security and correct orientation (hooks should rotate freely and be perpendicular to the support beam). Lubricate bushings with oil or WD-40® if squeaking occurs.
  • Shock Absorbing Surfacing:
    • Beginning of Play Season: Check for foreign objects. Rake and check the depth of loose-fill protective surfacing materials to prevent compaction and maintain appropriate depth. Replace as necessary.
    • Twice a Month During Play Season: Rake and check the depth of loose-fill protective surfacing materials to prevent compaction and maintain appropriate depth. Replace as necessary.
    • End of Play Season: Rake and check the depth of loose-fill protective surfacing materials to prevent compaction and maintain appropriate depth. Replace as necessary.
  • Swings, Ropes, and Rides:
    • Beginning of Play Season: Reinstall if removed for cold season. Check all moving parts, including swing seats, ropes, chains, and attachments, for wear, rust, and deterioration. Replace as needed. Ensure ropes are tight, secure at both ends, and not looped to create an entrapment hazard.
    • End of Play Season: Remove swings and store them indoors when outside temperatures are below 32°F/0°C to prolong their life, as plastic parts can become brittle in freezing conditions. Check swing seats, ropes, chains, and attachments for fraying, wear, excessive corrosion, or damage, and replace if structurally compromised.
  • Wood Parts:
    • Beginning of Play Season: Check all wood members for deterioration, structural damage, and splintering. Sand down splinters and replace deteriorated wood members. Some checking and small cracks in the grain are normal due to weathering.
    • Yearly Application: Apply a water repellent or water-based stain annually to maintain maximum life and performance of the product.
  • Slide: On sunny or hot days, check the slide and other plastic rides to ensure they are not too hot to cause burns. Cool hot surfaces with water and wipe dry before use. Orientate the slide to minimize sun exposure.
  • Disposal: When disposing of the play set, disassemble the unit to prevent unreasonable hazards and follow local waste ordinances.
  • Warning Labels: Owners are responsible for maintaining the legibility of all warning labels.
  • Parts Replacement: Replacement parts can be ordered 24/7 online via the KidKraft website or by scanning a QR code provided in the manual. The product includes a warning and ID plaque with a tracking number for ordering specific model parts.
