Do you have a question about the KRATOS SAFETY FA 30 1 Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes a range of energy absorbers and lanyards designed for personal fall protection, manufactured by KRATOS SAFETY. The products are compliant with European Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and EN 355:2002 standards.

Function Description

The devices are primarily designed to absorb the energy generated during a fall, thereby reducing the impact force on the user's body to a safe level, typically below 6 kN. They are integral components of a personal fall arrest system (PFAS), which also includes a harness, an anchorage point, and a connector. The energy absorber elongates during a fall, dissipating the kinetic energy. Lanyards, either fixed-length or adjustable, connect the user's harness to an anchorage point, ensuring that the user remains connected and limiting the fall distance. Some models are specifically designed for horizontal use or for situations where the anchorage point is at foot level.

Important Technical Specifications

The product range includes various models with different lengths and features, categorized by their reference numbers (e.g., FA 30 1XX XX, FA 30 2XX XX, etc.).

General Specifications:

  • Standard Compliance: EN 355:2002 (Energy Absorbers), EN 361 (Harnesses), EN 362 (Connectors), EN 363 (Fall Arrest Systems).
  • Maximum User Weight: Typically 100 kg or 140 kg, depending on the model and configuration.
  • Minimum Clearance: The required minimum clearance below the user varies by model and fall factor, ranging from 5.00 m to 6.30 m. This is a critical safety parameter to prevent ground impact.
  • Static Strength: The energy absorbers and lanyards are designed to withstand significant static loads, typically exceeding 15 kN.
  • Material: Primarily polyamide and/or polyester, known for their durability and resistance.
  • Temperature Range: Usable within a temperature range of -30°C to +50°C.
  • Energy Absorption: Designed to limit the impact force on the user to less than 6 kN during a fall.
  • Lifespan: The indicative lifespan of the product is 10 years from the date of manufacture, subject to annual inspections and proper maintenance.

Specific Model Variations (Examples):

  • FA 30 15 (1.50 m), FA 30 18 (1.80 m), FA 30 20 (2.00 m), FA 30 15 (1.50 m), FA 30 22 (2.00 m): These models represent different lengths of energy absorbers, each with specific fall factors and user weight capacities.
  • Gravity-S Lanyards (FA 30 512 12, FA 30 513 20, FA 30 510 15, FA 30 722 20, FA 30 723 20, FA 30 820 15, FA 30 822 15): These are specialized lanyards with integrated energy absorbers, designed for various applications, including horizontal use, work at foot level, or situations requiring specific anchorage configurations. Some are equipped with sharp edge resistance.
  • DIELÉCTRI (FA 30 404 15, FA 30 404 18): Dielectric energy absorbers are available for environments with electrical hazards, providing insulation.

Usage Features

Pre-Use Checks: Before each use, a thorough visual inspection is mandatory. Users must check for any signs of damage, wear, deformation, cuts, corrosion, or chemical alteration. The stitching, webbing, and metal components must be in good condition. Any device showing signs of damage or excessive wear must be immediately withdrawn from service.

Connection: The energy absorber or lanyard must be securely connected to the user's harness (dorsal or sternal attachment point, EN361) and to a suitable anchorage point (EN795). Connectors (EN362) must be fully closed and locked.

Fall Clearance: It is crucial to calculate and ensure sufficient fall clearance below the work area to prevent impact with the ground or any obstacles. The fall clearance includes the length of the lanyard, the elongation of the energy absorber, the height of the user, and a safety margin.

Anchorage: The anchorage point must have a minimum static strength of 12 kN and be located directly above the user whenever possible to minimize pendulum effect. For horizontal use, specific lanyards (e.g., Gravity-S) and techniques are required to manage the risk of sharp edges and ensure proper energy absorption.

Environmental Considerations: Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures, UV radiation, humidity, chemicals, electrical hazards, sharp edges, and abrasive surfaces, as these can degrade the product's performance and safety.

Training: Users must be trained and competent in the correct use, inspection, and maintenance of personal fall protection equipment.

Traceability: Each product has a unique serial number and manufacturing date for traceability.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning: Clean the product with water and mild soap, then rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow it to air dry in a well-ventilventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat. Do not use aggressive cleaning agents, solvents, or chemicals.

Storage: Store the equipment in a cool, dry, dark, and well-ventilated place, away from sharp objects, chemicals, and sources of heat or direct sunlight. Ensure it is protected from mechanical damage.

Periodic Inspection: The equipment must undergo a thorough inspection by a competent person at least once every 12 months. The inspection results must be recorded in the product's individual logbook. The manufacturer recommends withdrawing the product from service after 10 years from the date of manufacture, regardless of its condition, or sooner if any damage or defect is found.

Repair: Repairs must only be carried out by the manufacturer or an authorized service center. Unauthorized repairs will void the warranty and compromise the product's safety.

Withdrawal from Service: Any product that has arrested a fall, shows signs of damage, excessive wear, or has reached its maximum lifespan must be immediately withdrawn from service and destroyed to prevent accidental reuse.

The manufacturer provides additional information and resources, including declarations of conformity and user manuals, on their website (www.kratossafety.com) and through QR codes on the product labels.
