9.3.6 Setting the brakes with manual
linkage setter
Natural wear of brake drum and brake pad sometimes
makes a readjustment of the wheel brakes necessary,
in order to preserve the stroke of the brake cylinder as
completely as possible.
To achieve good brake retardation it is necessary
to keep the clearance of brake pad and brake drum as
low as possible.
Checking the clearance:
• Actuate the service brake with full pressure and
check the stroke of the brake cylinder.
In case the way on the clevis amounts more than 2/
3 of the maximum cylinder stroke (on piston type
cylinder approx. 80-90 mm, on membrane brake
cylinders approx. 35 mm), the brake must be
readjusted.
The setting is made on the readjustment hexagon (2)
(hexagonal head screw W/F 19 mm) of the
linkage setter (1):
With a correctly set brake the
piston rod should not be manually
movable more than approx. 10 mm.
Play between plunger and membrane in
idle position is not permissible.

Turn the adjusting screw to the
right until the
brake shoes fit tightly against the
brake drum.
Turn the adjusting screw to the left
until
the idle stroke on the linkage
setter (on 127 mm) amounts to
approx. 10-15 mm.
The wheel must be able to rotate
freely (without grinding noise)
