Do you have a question about the KYOWA PGM-D Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The KYOWA PGM-D Pressure Transducer is a high-precision instrument designed for measuring pressure, converting it into an electrical signal, and transmitting it to a recording device. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for its safe and effective use, maintenance, and technical specifications.

Function Description

The PGM-D series transducers operate on the principle of strain gauge measurement. When pressure is applied to the transducer, a diaphragm deforms, causing strain gauges bonded to it to change their electrical resistance. This change in resistance is converted into an electrical signal, typically a voltage, which is proportional to the applied pressure. The transducer is designed to provide stable and accurate measurements over its specified pressure range.

Usage Features

  • Installation:

    • Mounting: The transducer should be mounted securely to the measurement object using the specified tightening torque. For models PGM-10KD to PGM-500KD, the tightening torque ranges from 10 to 40 N·m depending on the model. Maximum tightening torque is 40 N·m.
    • Gasket: Always use a new gasket to ensure a proper seal and prevent leaks.
    • Wrench: Use a wrench on the flat-to-flat part of the transducer body (14mm for PGM-10KD to PGM-500KD) to tighten it. Do not apply the wrench to the cable side.
    • Cable Connection: Connect the transducer's cable to a measuring instrument (e.g., a strain amplifier or data logger). Ensure proper wiring according to the provided diagram (Wheatstone bridge configuration).
    • Cable Routing: Secure the cable to prevent damage from twisting or excessive bending. The bending radius of the cable should be at least 6 times its diameter.
  • Operation:

    • Excitation Voltage: Apply the recommended excitation voltage (1 to 2 V AC or DC) from the measuring instrument.
    • Calibration: For accurate measurements, it is crucial to calibrate the transducer and the measuring instrument. This typically involves applying known pressures and recording the corresponding output signals to establish a pressure-to-output relationship.
    • Zero Adjustment: Before starting measurements, perform a zero adjustment to compensate for any offset.
    • Temperature Compensation: The transducer is designed with temperature compensation, but for highly precise measurements, it is advisable to operate within the specified compensated temperature range (0 to 50°C).
  • Safety Precautions:

    • Liquid Contact: Do not immerse the transducer in liquid unless specifically designed for it. Avoid contact with water or other liquids to prevent damage.
    • Overload: Do not exceed the safe overload rating (150% of rated capacity) to prevent damage to the sensing element.
    • Condensation: Prevent condensation, especially in environments with rapid temperature changes.
    • Impact: Avoid dropping or subjecting the transducer to strong impacts.
    • Flammable/Explosive Environments: Do not use the transducer in flammable or explosive gas environments unless it is specifically certified for such use.
    • Disassembly: Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the transducer, as this will void the warranty and may damage the instrument.
    • Corrosive Liquids/Gases: Avoid contact with corrosive liquids or gases, as they can damage the stainless steel parts.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning:

    • Regularly clean the exterior of the transducer and the connector to prevent dust and dirt accumulation. Use a soft, dry cloth.
    • For the pressure port, carefully clean any residue that might affect measurement accuracy.
  • Inspection:

    • Annual Inspection: It is recommended to inspect the transducer at least once a year. This includes checking the input resistance, output resistance, and insulation resistance. If any abnormalities are found (e.g., input/output resistance below 100Ω), the transducer may be faulty and should be sent for repair or replacement.
    • Cable Inspection: Regularly check the cable for any signs of damage, cuts, or excessive bending. Replace the cable if damaged.
    • Gasket Replacement: Always use a new gasket when re-installing the transducer to ensure a proper seal.
  • Storage:

    • When not in use, store the transducer in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, and humidity.
    • Use the provided protective cap to cover the pressure port to prevent dust and damage.
  • Troubleshooting:

    • If the transducer does not operate correctly, first check the connections, excitation voltage, and calibration.
    • If the issue persists, refer to the troubleshooting section of the manual or contact KYOWA for support. Do not attempt unauthorized repairs.

The KYOWA PGM-D Pressure Transducer series is a reliable and accurate solution for various pressure measurement applications, provided it is used and maintained according to the guidelines outlined in this manual. Adhering to these instructions will ensure optimal performance, longevity, and safety of the instrument.
