OPERATION
Three speed transmission has a belt drive input
to three sets of constant mesh gears. These
gears are selected through sliding keys and
locked to the shift collar. This gear train drives
the final output through a non-slip ball clutch.
This feature eliminates drive train drag when
maneuvering mower without drive engaged.
You may place the speed control lever in three
positions to control ground speed. With the
engine running at
3200
RPM the ground speed
in position
1
is
1.9
mph, position
2
is
2.7
mph
and position
3
is
3.4
mph.
REMOVAL
A
SAFETY WARNING:
To
prevent
accidental starting
of
engine, dis-
connect spark plug lead wire.
Remove rear access door.
Electric Start Models:
Remove rear access door mounting screw,
tilt
access door back and disconnect battery
connector. Remove starter relay mounting
screw from battery mounting bracket.
Do
not disconnect leads attached to starter
relay. Disconnect wire harness from elec-
tronic cup assembly and remove rear ac-
cess
door from mower.
Remove upper and lower drive covers.
Place a block of wood under rear of housing to raise rear wheels.

Remove rear wheel mounting bolts and remove rear wheels from height adjust brackets.
Remove outer thin retaining rings from axle shaft. Remove pinion gears.
NOTE:
Use care not to over stretch retaining rings when removing.
NOTE:
Pinion gears are stamped with letter
L
(left) or
R
(right), they are not interchange-
able during reassembly.
NOTE:
Exercise care when removing pinions from axle shaft to prevent dropping or misplac-
ing key or spring.
Remove key, spring and thin washer
(0.030)
from axle shaft.
NOTE:
Spring removalis required
to
prevent catching during disassembly of height adjustors
Remove inner thick retaining ring, thick washer
(0.060)
and dust cover from axle shaft.
NOTE:
Retaining rings are different thickness forproper spacing and are not interchangeable.
