Overview

This document describes the LEXIVON LX-183 1/2-inch drive click torque wrench, a precision measuring instrument designed for accurate torque application.

Function Description

The LEXIVON LX-183 is a 1/2-inch drive click torque wrench used for tightening nuts and bolts to a specific torque value. It operates by providing an audible "CLICK" or a felt "IMPULSE" when the preset torque is reached, indicating that the user should stop applying force. This tool is designed to measure torque in a clockwise direction only and should not be used for loosening fasteners or for extreme operations like breaking loose stuck fasteners. Its primary function is to ensure fasteners are tightened to the correct specification, preventing over-tightening which can damage components, or under-tightening which can lead to failures.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Drive Size: 1/2-inch
  • Torque Range:
    • Foot-Pounds (ft-lb): 10-150 ft-lb
    • Newton-Meters (Nm): 13.6-203.5 Nm
  • Accuracy: +/- 4%
  • Scale Divisions:
    • Main Scale: Divided into major torque increments.
    • Micrometer Scale: Divides main scale markings into 10 divisions. Each micrometer scale marking equals 1 ft-lb or 1.36 Nm.
  • Operation Direction: Clockwise only.
  • Storage Setting: Must be stored at the lowest torque setting (10 ft-lb / 13.6 Nm) to relieve tension on the internal spring and maintain accuracy.

Usage Features

  • Dual-Range Scale: The wrench features both foot-pounds (ft-lb) and Newton-meters (Nm) scales on opposite sides of the handle, allowing for versatile use in different measurement systems.
  • Setting Torque:
    1. Unlock: Locate the lock nut on the end of the handle and turn it counterclockwise to unlock the knurled handle.
    2. Rough Setting: Turn the knurled handle until its top edge aligns with the desired major torque mark on the main scale (e.g., "90" for 90 ft-lb) and the "0" mark on the micrometer scale is centered on the vertical line of the main scale.
    3. Fine Setting: To increase the torque from the main scale reading, turn the micrometer handle clockwise until the desired micrometer scale mark (e.g., "5" for an additional 5 ft-lb) is centered on the vertical line of the main scale. The total torque is the sum of the main scale and micrometer scale readings (e.g., 90 ft-lb + 5 ft-lb = 95 ft-lb).
    4. Lock: Turn the lock nut clockwise until snug to secure the torque setting.
  • Wrench Operation:
    1. Install the appropriate socket or attachment on the square drive and apply it to the nut or bolt.
    2. Keep the tightening hand centered on the knurled handle for accurate results.
    3. Operate the wrench to tighten the nut/bolt with a smooth and steady pull.
    4. Stop pulling immediately when a "CLICK" is heard or an "IMPULSE" is felt, and release pressure on the handle.
  • Automatic Reset: The wrench automatically resets for the next operation after pressure is released.
  • Important Operation Notices:
    • Avoid operating the wrench too quickly or with excessive force, as this can lead to missing the exact torque setting.
    • Do not continue to pull after the torque setting is reached, as this can damage the internal mechanism.
    • At low torque settings, the "click" can be subtle; it is recommended to use the wrench in a quiet environment.
    • The wrench is not designed for loosening fasteners.
    • Tighten/adjust the lock nut and knurled handle by hand only.

Maintenance Features

  • Initial Use After Storage: If the wrench has not been used for a long period, operate it several times at a low torque setting. This helps to recoat internal components with lubricant.
  • Storage Setting: Always store the torque wrench at its lowest torque setting (10 ft-lb / 13.6 Nm). This relieves tension on the internal spring, which is crucial for maintaining the tool's calibration and accuracy over time. Do not turn the handle below the lowest torque setting.
  • Cleaning: Clean the wrench by wiping it with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not immerse it in any liquid or cleaner, as this can damage the internal components.
  • Environment: Store the wrench in a clean, dry environment.
  • Precision Instrument: Handle the wrench with care as it is a precision measuring instrument.
