Overview

This document describes the LG Microwave Grill/Combination Oven, models MG-396WA and MG-397WB, providing a comprehensive guide for its operation, safety, and maintenance. The oven is designed for domestic use and offers various cooking modes, including microwave, grill, and combination cooking, as well as auto cook and defrost functions.

Function Description

The LG Microwave Grill/Combination Oven utilizes microwave energy for cooking, which is generated by a magnetron tube and directed into the cooking area. Microwaves heat food by causing its water molecules to vibrate, generating heat from within. The oven is equipped with a turntable (GLASS TRAY) and a ROTATING RING to ensure even cooking. It also features a GRILL RACK for grilling functions.

  • Micro Power Cooking: This mode uses microwave energy to cook food. The oven offers five power settings: HIGH MAX (100%), MEDIUM HIGH (80%), MEDIUM (60%), DEFROST/MEDIUM LOW (40%), and LOW (20%). Each power level is suitable for different types of food and cooking tasks, from boiling water and cooking poultry at high power to softening butter and raising yeast dough at low power.
  • Grill Cooking: This function uses a sheath grill to brown and crisp food quickly. Preheating is not required for this mode. The grill rack can be used in two positions (high or low) depending on the food type and size.
  • Combination Cooking: This feature allows the oven to use both the heater (grill) and microwave simultaneously or alternately. This mode generally reduces cooking time compared to using a single mode. The sheath heater grills the food's surface while microwaves heat the inside. There are different combination modes (Co-1, Co-2, Co-3) with varying percentages of microwave and heater power.
  • Auto Cook: This function simplifies cooking by allowing users to select a food type and enter its weight. The oven then automatically determines the appropriate cooking time and mode. For vegetables, only microwave mode is used, while for meat, grill and microwave modes are used alternately. Food types include Boiled Potato, Steamed Vegetable, Pre-Cook Vegetable, Instant Pizza, French Fries, and Grilled Chicken.
  • Auto Defrost: This feature is designed to defrost various frozen foods efficiently. It has four categories: MEAT, POULTRY, FISH, and BREAD, each with specific power settings. The oven will "BEEP" during defrosting to prompt the user to turn the food over or separate portions to ensure even thawing.
  • Quick Defrost: A specialized defrost function for quickly thawing 0.5kg of minced meat. It requires a standing time to allow the center to thaw completely.
  • Quick Start: This feature allows for quick cooking at HIGH power in 30-second intervals with a single touch of the START key. Cooking time can be extended up to 10 minutes by repeatedly pressing the MORE key during operation.
  • Two Stage Cooking: This function allows users to program two different cooking stages with varying power levels and durations, providing flexibility for complex recipes.

Usage Features

The oven is designed with user convenience and safety in mind.

  • Setting the Clock: The oven supports both 12-hour and 24-hour clock formats. The clock needs to be reset after the first plug-in or a power cut.
  • Child Lock: A safety feature that prevents accidental operation of the oven. Once activated, no functions can be used, although the oven door can still be opened. The child lock is indicated by an "L" on the display.
  • More or Less Cooking: This feature allows users to adjust the cooking time of preset AUTO COOK programs. Pressing MORE increases the cooking time by 10 seconds per press, while pressing LESS decreases it by 10 seconds per press. This adjustment can be made during cooking without stopping the process.
  • Door Handle: The oven door is opened by pulling the door handle.
  • Display: The display shows the time, cooking settings, and countdown during operation.
  • Control Panel: Features various buttons for selecting cooking modes, power levels, time, and other functions. A beep sound confirms each button press.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of the oven.

  • Cleaning the Oven Interior: Food spatters and spilled liquids should be wiped up immediately with a damp cloth. Crumbs that fall between the door and frame should also be cleaned to maintain a tight seal. Greasy spatters can be removed with a soapy cloth, then rinsed and dried. Harsh detergents or abrasive cleaners should not be used. The GLASS TRAY can be washed by hand or in a dishwasher.
  • Cleaning the Oven Exterior: The outside of the oven should be cleaned with soap and water, then with clean water and a soft cloth or paper towel. Care must be taken to prevent water from seeping into ventilation openings. The control panel should be wiped with a damp cloth and immediately dried, pressing STOP after cleaning.
  • Door and Door Seals: These areas should be kept clean using warm, soapy water, then rinsed and dried thoroughly. Abrasive materials, cleaning powders, or steel/plastic pads should not be used. Metal parts can be maintained by frequent wiping with a damp cloth.
  • Steam Accumulation: If steam accumulates inside or around the oven door, it should be wiped with a soft cloth. This is normal under high humidity conditions and does not indicate a malfunction.
  • Utensil Compatibility: The manual provides guidance on microwave-safe utensils, emphasizing that metal or metal-trimmed utensils should never be used. It also advises testing uncertain utensils by microwaving them with a glass of water.
  • Food Characteristics & Microwave Cooking: The manual offers tips on how food characteristics (density, height, moisture, bone/fat content, shape, quantity) affect cooking times and how to adjust techniques like stirring, turning over, shielding, elevating, and piercing to ensure even and safe cooking. It also highlights the importance of standing time after cooking.

The oven is designed with safety interlocks that prevent operation when the door is open. It is crucial not to tamper with these interlocks. The oven should not be operated if damaged, especially if the door, hinges, latches, or seals are compromised. Repairs should only be performed by qualified service personnel.
