The layer of embers was too small/no longer glowing and did not produce heat
enough to kindle the pieces of wood. Some primary air may be fed through the
ashpan register to get the stove going again after which it is again closed
entirely.
Depending on the type of problem you may have to contact your Lotus
distributor or a chimney sweep.
