Attic Ladder Location Selection

Step 1: Preliminary Installation

Attach Temporary Supports

Secure temporary supports A and B to the header above the rough opening using deck screws.

Measure and Secure Support B

Measure and secure support B from support A, ensuring screws penetrate the header.

Thread Pull Cord

Thread the pull cord through the pre-drilled hole in the door and tie a knot securely.

Positioning for Installation

Position one person in the attic and another below for safe ladder handling.

Step 1 Continued: Securing the Frame

Raise Ladder into Opening

Raise the attic ladder into the rough opening with assistance and position it on temporary supports.

Secure Door Hinge Side Frame

Push the frame on the door hinge side against the header and center it, temporarily securing it.

Center and Square Frame

Center and square the opposite side of the attic ladder frame using shims and check diagonals.

Secure Frame to Joists

Secure the sides of the ladder frame to ceiling joists using deck screws at shim locations.

Step 2: Permanent Installation

Shim and Drill Pilot Holes

Shim the ladder frame at pre-drilled locations and drill pilot holes through shims into joists and header.

Install Lag Screws

Install the ten 3-inch lag screws to permanently secure the ladder at all locations.

Step 3: Adjust Ladder Length

Unfold Ladder Sections

Remove plastic straps and carefully unfold the ladder sections to the ground.

Aluminum Models: Determine Cuts

For aluminum models, determine correct rail and foot cuts based on ceiling height using Table 3.

Cut Side Rails and Feet

Cut the side rails and ladder feet at the appropriate lines as indicated in Figure 9.

Extend Folding Arms

Press down on the climbing section to ensure the folding arms are fully extended.

Step 3 Continued: Final Adjustments and Checks

Attach Aluminum Feet

Slide aluminum feet onto the ladder rail and attach using bolts and serrated nuts.

Check Ladder Length

Verify the ladder length is correct, ensuring no gaps and feet are flat on the floor.

Adjust Leg Lengths

Adjust leg lengths by moving bolts on adjustable feet if the ladder is too long or too short.

Install Trim Molding Clearance

Ensure proper clearance for trim molding between the door panel and ladder sides.

Appendix: Framing Rough Opening

Rough Opening Without Joist Removal

Locate headers and check squareness for openings without joist removal as per Figure 14.

Rough Opening With Joist Removal

Install temporary supports and remove joists for double headers when joists are removed.

Locate and secure double headers and install the stringer, checking for squareness.
