POWER DISTRIBUTION UNIT PDU
The PDU contains both the 230v ac
equipment and the Power Supply to give 12
volts dc. This is capable of running the 12
volts system on its own or in conjunction with
a leisure battery. It is however advisable to
run with a battery in circuit.
Contained within the PDU are all the input
and output circuit fuses. These are clearly
identified and have the size of fuse clearly
marked, this rating should not be exceeded.
230volts ac
Containing the Earth leakage protection RCD
(Residual Current Devise) and the
Overprotection current device MCB’s
(Miniature Circuit Breakers).
12volt dc
Fully automatic power supply capable of
running the 12 volt system up to 20 amps at
13.8 volts.
If a fault condition such as a short circuit or
overload occurs, the power supply will
automatically switch off until the fault is
removed. This system is also capable of
charging a totally flat lead acid, gel or AGM
battery, however depending on its state this
may take up to 48 hours. It is also
recommended that you only use the power
supply in the PDU to charge your leisure
battery.
Control system
Within the PDU relays control the system
automatically when it chooses Car or Van
Supply. When the Caravan is plugged into
the Car then it will automatically switch to
use the Car. However care should be taken
when using power from the car battery, as
this could drain the voltage of the car battery
rendering insufficient voltage to start the car.
Continued use of a car battery to supply
power to the caravan will in time cause
damage to a car battery, and it is
recommended to fit a leisure battery to the
caravan.
When the Car ignition is switched on and the
engine is started the interior supply to the
Caravan 12 volt system will switch off
(except alarm if fitted), and the supply to the
fridge is connected. When the car engine is
switched off the 12 volt power to the caravan
is restored, however the 12-volt power to the
fridge will be disconnected.
Ensure that the steps on page 43
"Instructions for electricity supply" are
followed.
OPERATION
Disconnect the electrical connector between
the towing vehicle and the caravan before
connecting an LV (low voltage) supply to the
caravan and before charging the caravan
battery by any other means.
Connect the 230 volt mains lead to the
mains inlet fitted within the battery box, and
then connect to the supply on the caravan
site. Switch on the RCD and MCB’s, at this
point it is important to check the operation of
the RCD and check the polarity of the site
connection using a polarity tester. If the
polarity is incorrect the site operators should
be notified and rectified by a qualified
electrician.
