BASIC PROCEDURES
Engine Starting Procedure
Procedure
1. Apply parking brake.
2. Recheck throttle control lever oper-
ation.
3. Put your h elm et on.
4. Ensure that the tether cord cap is in-
stalled on the engine cut-off switch
and that the cord is attached to your
clothing ey elet.
5. Ensure that the emergency engine
stop switch is in the ON position
(up).
6. Depress the START button to en-
gage the electric starter and start
the engine. Release button imme-
diately when engine has started.
WARNING
Never depress throttle while start-
ing engine.
Manual Start E-TEC Models
Grab rewind starter handle, pull handle
slowly until a resistance is felt, then
hold handle firmly and pull vigorously
to start engine.
WARNING
Do not apply throttle while start-
ing.
Electric Start E -TEC models
Depress the START/RER button to en-
gage the electric starter and start the
engine.
Release button immediately when en-
gine has started.
WARNING
Do not apply throttle while start-
ing.
CAUTION Do not use electric
starter for more than 10 seconds. A
rest period should be observed be-
tween the cranking cycles to let elec-
tric starter cool down. Using elec-
tric starter when engine has started
could damage electric s ta rter mech-
anism.
NOTE: If for any reason, the engine
cannot be c ranked electrically, start en-
gine manually using the rewind starter.
7. Release parking brake.
NOTE: For an initial cold start, do not
release parking brake. Perform the
VEHICLE WARM-UP
procedure as ex-
plained below.
NOTICE
Do not engage electric
starter for more than 10 seconds at
a time. A rest period should be ob-
served between the cranking cycles
to allow electric starter to cool down.

Emergency Starting
(E-TEC)
ACE Models
Do not attem pt a n emergency starting
procedure. Have the battery charged
or replaced.
NOTE: Emergency manual engine
start is not provided for ACE models.
E- TEC
The engine can be started with the
emergency starter rope supplied with
the tool kit.
Remove belt guard.
