8.14 TYRES
The tyres should be carefully checked for correct ination, cuts, abrasions, wear, slippage and
other obvious defects and replaced if necessary. The tyres may be demounted from the wheels
by deating the tubes, then removing the wheel through-bolts, allowing the wheel halves to be
separated.
WARNING:
REMOVAL OF THE WHEEL THROUGH-BOLTS WITHOUT FIRST DEFLATING
THE TUBE MAY RESULT IN DEATH OR INJURY.
The recommended tyre ination pressures are:
MAINS WHEELS 186 - 200 kPa (27 - 29 psi)
NOSE WHEEL 214 - 228 kPa (31 - 33 psi)
When carrying heavy loads, or when operating from hard or sealed surfaces, increased
pressures in the mains may be found desirable. Operator experience and the tyre wear pattern
may be used as a guide to determine variations to the specied tyre pressures.
Conversely when operating from soft surfaces, reduced tyre pressure in the mains will reduce
the tendency to sink in. Operator experience should be used as a guide to determine minimum
acceptable tyre pressures.
In addition to increased tyre wear, operation on hard surfaces with low or reduced tyre pressure
will increase the tendency for the tyre to slip on the rim under braking, and will also lead to
decreased tyre life.
8.15 INDUCTION AIR FILTER
Dust and dirt must be prevented from entering the engine induction system. Dust and dirt
ingested into the engine is probably the greatest single cause of premature engine wear. The
value of maintaining the air lter in good clean condition cannot be overstressed.
Visual Inspection. A visual inspection of the foam cartridge should be carried out daily at pre-
ight, or more frequently under very dusty conditions. This inspection is to determine if the foam
cartridge has been dislodged or damaged or suffering an excessive build up of debris.
Cleaning. The cartridge is treated with a sticky material during manufacture to increase its
dust trapping ability and should be replaced at each 100 hourly service or sooner as required
by conditions.
