When servicing
engines,
check
the
cam-

the
points
indicated
by the
asterisks in
Fig. 9. Examine
the
gear
teeth
for
wear
and
damage.
2.
Correct
valve timing
is obtained
when the
chamfered
gear
tooth
on the
cranksha^ft
is
matched
with the
mark
and the hobbing
hole
on
the
camshaJt
gear.

PISTONS
AND
RINGS
1.
Stagger
the
piston
ring
gaps
g0o
apart
when installing
piston
and ring
assembly into
cylinder.

Fig. 11.
The wrist
pin
retainer
must
be
seated in the
groove. (Move
the
wrist
pin
if necessary.
)
Failure
to
correctly
seat
the retainer
may re-
suit in costly
repairs.
The wrist
pin
is
a
palm
press
fit.
If loose,
check
connecting rod
for
seizing.
Replace
pis-
ton
and wrist
pin
if
loose.
2.
Using a
feeler
gauge,
check
clearance
of the
ring
in the
groove.
12.
If
excessive,
replace
the
piston.
