Only correct
piston
ring
installation
will
assure fuII
power.
Carefully note
the
ring
se-
quence
when
removing
the worn rings
from
the
piston.
(Refer
to Fig. 15 for
the
proper
se-
quence.
)
Note
especiaily
the ring expalder,
as
it may
be
found
either
behind the
second
(com-

or behind
the third
(oii

ring.
Although
piston
rings
are
installed
correctly,
they wiil
not
perform
unless
the
piston'
and
cylinder
are reconditioned.

as
instructed in
Step

in the
seating
of
the rings.
When
reinstalling
the rings, note
the marks
on the first
and second rings.
These
indicate
the
top

ring.
Stagger the ring

CONNECTING
ROD
1.
When
reinstalling
a
used
connecting
rod,
ALWAYS use new
nuts
on the bolts.
These
are
locking
nuts
and it
is inexpensive
insurance
that the torque
will
be retained
when the
con-
necting rod
is replaced.
The
connecting
rod
must be
installed with the
match mark facing
out of the
cylinder, toward
the
PTO end of the
crankshaft
as
shown in
Fig.
16.
This will
assure the
correct
positioning
of
the
oi1
dipper.
The heads of the
through bolts
must be
seated
tight
against
the
machined shoulder
on the con-
necting rod.
Failure
to
check this may result
in
a false
torque
reading
and
prematurefailure.

2.
It
is extremely
important
that
a
torque
of
110
inch-pounds
is
maintained.
After initial
torque, use
a
drift
and a
hammer
and
strike
the rod
bearing
cap
above
each
locknut.
This
will
seat
the
cap,
releasing
some
torque
on
the
locknuts.
Retorque Iocknuts
to 110
inch-
pounds.
