A.
ENGINE
FAILS TO START
OR
STARTS
WITH
DIFFICULTY
Cause
Remedy
No fuel
in
tank.
Shut-offvalve
closed.
Obstructed
fuel line.
Fuel
tank
cap vent
hole obstructed.
Water
in fuel.
Engine over-choked
(flooded).
Improper
carburetor
adjustrnent.
Loose
or defective magneto
wiring.
Faulty
magneto.
Spark plug fouled.
Spark plug porcelain
cracked.
Poor compression.
Fill tank with clean, fresh
fuel.
Open
valve.
Clean fuel screen
and
line.
If
necessary, remove and
clean carburetor.
Open vent hole.
Drain tank.
Clearn ctrrburetor :rnd fuel lines. Dry
spark plug
electrode.
Fill ttrnk
rvith
clean, fresh
fucl.
Close
fuel
shut-off and
start engine.
Reopen ftrel
shut-offfor
normal fuel
flow.
Adjust carburetor.
Check magneto wiring for
shorts or
grounds;
repirir
if necessary.
Check
timing,
point
gap,
arnd
if necessary, overhaul
magneto.
Clean and regap
spark plug.
Replace spark
plug.
Check
compression
and
make
necessary repairs.
B.
ENGINE
KNOCKS
Cause
Remedy
Carbon in
combustion chamber.
Loose
or worn connecting rod.
Loose
flywheel.
Worn
cylinder.
Improper
magneto timing.
Excessive
main bearing
end
play.
Remove cylinder
head or cylinder and
clean carbon
from
head and piston.
Replace
connecting rod.
Check flywheel
key and keyway; replace parts if
necessary.
Tighten flywheel nut to
50-55
ft.-lbs.
torque.
Recondition
cylinder.
Time ignition.
Readjust to
correct
crankshaft end play.
