VALVES
GRINDING AND REPLACEMENT
Valves
and valve seats can be
reground
with a
minimum
of engine disassembly.
1.
Remove valves as
follows:
a.
Remove fuel
tank,
carburetor,
muffier
and cylinder
head from engine.
b.
Remove
two screws that hold breather
cover to
crankcase;
remove
breather cover
and
breather
assembly.
c.
Raise
lower
valve spring caps
with blade of
screw-
driver while holding valve heads
tightly against
valve seat.
Remove valve
spring cap
pin
from
valve
with long-nosed pliers.
d. Lift
valves
from cylinder block.
Remove valve
spring
and valve spring caps
from crankcase.
2.
Clean all
parts with
solvent, carefully
removing all
carbon from
valves.
3.
Check valve springs
for compression
and
pitting.
If valve
springs are
less
than
15/ro-inch
long, or are
pitted,
replace them.
4. Carefully inspect
valves
for distortion
or other
damage.
If valves
are in
usable condition,
chuck them
in
a
valve
refacing
machine and
grind
valve
f'aces to
the
angle
given
in
"Specifications".
If valve
faces
are
ground

5.
Carefully check valve seats for cracks or
pitting.
Valve seats are perrnanently
irrstalled and
are not
re-
movable. If the
valve
seat is warped
or
distorted, crank-
case
must be
replaced.
Grind
pitted
valve seats
as
described in
"Regrinding
Valve Seats". If
no
pits
are
found, lapping in
the valves will
provide
a
proper seat.
6.
Lapping
in
valves is recommended, whenever
new
or
reground
valves are installed, to insure a
gas-tight
fit.
Lap
in
valves as follows:
a. Coat the face of
valve
sparingly with a fine
grade
of valve
grinding
compound
and using a vacuum
cup
valve
grinder
to
grip
top of valve,
rotate
valve
in circular motion
on valve
seat.
