Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions for the installation of Master Lock knob, lever, and deadbolt locksets, covering both single and double cylinder configurations.

Function Description:

The Master Lock locksets are designed to secure doors by providing a locking mechanism that can be operated by a knob, lever, or key. The installation process involves preparing the door, installing the latch, and then assembling the interior and exterior components of the lockset. The deadbolt locksets offer an additional layer of security, with options for single-cylinder (key outside, thumbturn inside) or double-cylinder (key on both sides) operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Backset: The locksets are supplied with an adjustable latch that can accommodate two common backset measurements: 2-3/8" (60mm) or 2-3/4" (70mm). The backset is defined as the distance from the door edge to the center of the hole on the door face. Instructions are provided for converting the latch between these two backset settings.
  • Door Face Hole: A 2-1/8" (54mm) hole is required on the door face for the main body of the lockset. It is recommended to drill this hole from both sides of the door to prevent wood splitting.
  • Latch Hole: A 1" (25.4mm) hole is required for the latch mechanism, drilled into the edge of the door.
  • Strike Plate Mortise: The strike plate, installed on the door jamb, requires a mortise (chiseled recess) approximately 1/8" deep to ensure it sits flush with the jamb.
  • Strike Hole: A 1" hole, 1/2" deep, is drilled into the door jamb at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical centerlines for the deadbolt to extend into.
  • Faceplate Mortise: The latch faceplate requires a mortise of 11/64" (4mm) deep to sit flush with the door edge.
  • Spindle Cam: For knob/lever locksets, the spindle cam plays a crucial role in backset adjustment. Pulling it all the way to the right sets the latch for 2-3/4" backset, while pushing it all the way to the left resets it for 2-3/8" backset.
  • Torque Blade: This component is essential for transmitting the turning motion from the knob/lever/key to the latch mechanism. It must be horizontally inserted into the latch crank during installation.
  • Keyhole Orientation: For proper installation of the exterior knob/lever/cylinder, the keyhole should be in the down position.
  • Screw Holes: Tapped holes in the housing of the exterior cylinder must align with screwholes for secure fastening.

Usage Features:

  • Adjustable Backset: The ability to adjust the backset (2-3/8" or 2-3/4") makes these locksets versatile for various door preparations.
  • Interchangeable Faceplates: The latch mechanism allows for the attachment of different faceplates (round or square) to match the mortise in the door edge, ensuring a clean and professional finish.
  • Drive-in Installation Option: Specific instructions are provided for drive-in latch installations, where the latchbolt is pushed to the end, aligned with the round face plate opening, and rotated counter-clockwise for assembly. The floating sleeve then secures the edge into the ring opening.
  • Single vs. Double Cylinder Deadbolts: The manual covers both single-cylinder (key outside, thumbturn inside) and double-cylinder (key on both sides) deadbolt options, catering to different security preferences.
  • Clear Installation Steps: The instructions are broken down into logical steps, from marking the door to installing the final components, making the process manageable for DIY installers.
  • Visual Aids: The manual includes numerous diagrams and illustrations to visually guide the user through each step, clarifying complex procedures like backset adjustment and component alignment.

Maintenance Features:

  • Component-Based Design: The locksets are designed with distinct components (latch, faceplates, interior/exterior mechanisms, cylinders) that can be individually installed or potentially replaced, simplifying future maintenance or repairs.
  • Screwed Fastening: The use of screws for securing components like the latch, strike plate, and interior/exterior mechanisms allows for easy disassembly and reassembly if adjustments or repairs are needed.
  • Adjustable Latch Mechanism: The latch's ability to be adjusted for backset also implies that it can be re-adjusted if the door or frame shifts over time, ensuring continued proper operation.
  • Clear Disassembly Instructions (Implied): While primarily an installation guide, the detailed steps for assembling components implicitly provide a roadmap for disassembling them if maintenance or replacement becomes necessary. For instance, the instructions for separating faceplates with a flat screwdriver indicate a simple method for accessing the latch mechanism.
