QUICK START SETUP
1. WIRING MCS-WIRELESS-MODEM-B (or MCS-WIRELSS-MODEM-INT-B)
MCS-WIRELESS MODEM-B / INT-B ships as shown, use power plug or cut o󰀨 plug and wire to a
12 volt power supply (not included).
1. If using a 12 volt power supply, cut the wire at the plug end, exposing the red and black
wires.
2. Connect the red wire to the +V connection of the power and black to the -V connection.
DUAL BAND ANTENNA
MCS recommends using the DUAL BAND ANTENNA BOOSTER for better reception.
Attach the Dual Band Antenna, thumb tight only to Mobile Main Antenna connection.
2. CONNECT TO THE MCS-MAGNUM
Connect the Crossover orange CATS 5 cable from MCS-WIRELESS-MODEM-B to the Ethernet
port on the MAGNUM and the other end of the cable to the LAN port on the MCS-WIRELESS-MODEM-B
or MCS-WIRELESS-INT-B.

Overview

The MCS-WIRELESS-MODEM-B and MCS-WIRELESS-MODEM-INT-B are devices designed to provide wireless internet connectivity, primarily for integration with MCS-MAGNUM systems. These modems facilitate remote communication and control, making them suitable for industrial or remote monitoring applications where a stable and reliable internet connection is crucial.

Function Description:

The core function of these modems is to establish a wireless internet connection, typically via cellular networks (2G, 3G, 4G), and then bridge this connection to an MCS-MAGNUM controller via an Ethernet port. This allows the MCS-MAGNUM to access the internet for various purposes, such as data logging, remote access, and system updates. The devices are designed to be powered by a 12VDC supply, offering flexibility in power source integration. They support the use of a SIM card for cellular network access, and the manual emphasizes the importance of selecting a SIM card compatible with the local phone carrier and suitable for the intended area. The modems also feature Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing for local network access or acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot. A key feature is the ability to connect to the MCS-MAGNUM via a crossover Ethernet cable, ensuring a direct and reliable data link. For enhanced security and remote access, the devices support OpenVPN client functionality, enabling secure communication channels over the internet.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Supply: 12VDC. The manual indicates that the power plug can be cut off for direct wiring to a 12V power supply.
  • Cellular Network Support: Indicated by LEDs for 2G, 3G, and 4G, suggesting compatibility with various cellular network generations.
  • Connectivity:
    • Mobile Main Antenna Connector: For attaching the primary cellular antenna.
    • Mobile AUX Antenna Connector: For an auxiliary cellular antenna, potentially for diversity or MIMO.
    • WiFi Antenna Connector: For Wi-Fi connectivity.
    • Ethernet Port (LAN): For connecting to the MCS-MAGNUM or other local network devices.
    • WAN Port: Likely for connecting to an external network or another modem.
    • SIM Holder: For inserting a SIM card to enable cellular data.
    • Power Socket: For the 12VDC power input.
  • Indicators:
    • Power LED: Indicates the device's power status.
    • Mobile Signal Strength Indication LEDs: Multiple LEDs to show the strength of the cellular signal.
    • Mobile Network Type LEDs: Separate LEDs for 2G, 3G, and 4G to indicate the active network type.
    • LAN LED: Indicates activity on the LAN port.
    • WAN LED: Indicates activity on the WAN port.
  • IP Address: The factory set IP address for new MCS-WIRELESS-MODEM-B devices is provided on a label on the unit.
  • VPN Support: OpenVPN client functionality is supported for secure remote connections.

Usage Features:

  • Flexible Powering: Can be powered directly from a 12VDC supply by cutting the plug, or using a standard power adapter.
  • Enhanced Reception: MCS recommends using a DUAL BAND ANTENNA BOOSTER for better reception, which attaches to the Mobile Main Antenna connection.
  • Easy SIM Card Installation: Features a SIM holder that can be accessed by pushing the SIM button with a needle, and then sliding the holder back into the router.
  • Direct Connection to MCS-MAGNUM: Connects to the MCS-MAGNUM using a crossover orange CATS 5 Ethernet cable.
  • Network Configuration: The device's IP address is factory set and provided on a label, simplifying initial setup. Users can then connect to the device's web interface to configure network settings.
  • OpenVPN Client: The device can be configured as an OpenVPN client, allowing for secure and encrypted communication over public networks. This involves importing an OVPN profile file via the device's web interface.
  • Remote Connectivity: After configuring OpenVPN, the device can connect to the Magnum over Remote Ethernet, enabling remote monitoring and control.
  • Multiple MAGNUMs Support: The manual illustrates a scenario where multiple MCS-MAGNUMs can connect to a single modem via an Ethernet switch, indicating scalability.
  • Din Rail Mounting: The supplied Din Rail mounting kit allows for easy installation in an enclosure.

Maintenance Features:

  • Reset Button: A physical reset button is available, likely for restoring factory settings or rebooting the device.
  • LED Indicators: Comprehensive LED indicators provide visual feedback on power status, cellular signal strength, network type, and LAN/WAN activity, aiding in troubleshooting and monitoring.
  • Web Interface: The device features a web-based interface for configuration and management, accessible via a web browser. This interface provides access to network options, VPN settings, and other device parameters.
  • Firmware Updates: While not explicitly detailed as a maintenance feature, devices of this type typically support firmware updates to improve performance, add features, or address security vulnerabilities.
  • Antenna Management: The ability to attach external antennas, including boosters, allows for optimization of signal reception and potentially easier replacement of damaged antennas.

In summary, the MCS-WIRELESS-MODEM-B and MCS-WIRELESS-MODEM-INT-B are robust wireless modems designed for industrial applications, offering reliable cellular connectivity, secure remote access via VPN, and seamless integration with MCS-MAGNUM controllers.
