Overview

This document provides a service manual for the Freightliner / Daimler Corporation M2 Mirror Systems, manufactured by Lang-Mekra. It covers general procedures, troubleshooting, repair, and warranty information for these mirror systems.

Function Description:

The Lang-Mekra M2 Mirror System is designed for Freightliner / Daimler Corporation trucks, providing essential rear-view visibility for the driver. The system can include various features such as heated mirrors, remote adjustment, and an Ambient Air Temperature (AAT) sensor. The mirrors are designed with a durable mirror plate and anti-shattering adhesive to enhance safety by minimizing splintering in case of breakage. The system also incorporates a fold-away feature to help minimize damage to the mirror system and the door in the event of impact.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fastener Torque: Upper fastener kit nut should be tightened to 14-16 N-m. Clamp screws for mirror head adjustment should be tightened to 9-11 N-m (5-8 ft-lbs). Motor (actuator) retaining screws should be tightened to 0.7-1.2 N-m using a 4mm torx driver.
  • AAT Sensor: The AAT sensor (part number 080063996) provides ambient air temperature readings. The manual includes an RT table for 8536-202 (CUMMINS) detailing resistance values (kOhms) at various temperatures (°C and °F). For example, at 25°C (77°F), the resistance should be between 9.12 kOhms (MIN) and 10.88 kOhms (MAX).
  • Wiring: The manual provides a detailed wiring diagram for heated/remote/light/AAT wiring, including connections for the main mirror, actuator, heater, marker light, AAT sensor, and convex mirror. It specifies a 3-pin connector (Deutsch DT-H CN1) and a 2-pin connector (Delphi p/n 12162343) for the door connections. Motor connector wiring is also detailed: LH (1-Red & Black, 2-White, 3-Gray) and RH (1-Gray & white, 2-Black, 3-Red).
  • Components: The system consists of an upper bracket holder, lower bracket holder, mirror bracket ("C-Loop"), main (flat) glass assembly, convex glass assembly, mirror head, actuators (motors), and various cables (control cable, CB cable, heater cable, AAT cable). An optional flip-out (third) arm (part number 614100006) can be installed to address mirror vibration.

Usage Features:

  • Mirror Head Adjustment: The mirror head can be adjusted by loosening two clamp bolts using a T-30 driver, positioning the mirror to the desired viewing angle, and then tightening the clamp screws to 9-11 N-m. It is crucial to ensure the optimum viewing angle for the driver.
  • Mirror Plate Exchange: The mirror system uses a carrier plate style for the mirror glass. To remove, a small flat-head screwdriver is used to push in locking tabs through access slits while firmly pulling on the mirror plate. For heated mirrors, heater wires must be detached from the back of the plate without cutting them. Installation involves attaching wire terminals (if heated), aligning locking clips with the mirror housing (ensuring clips are inside the housing), and firmly pressing the mirror plate into place until all clips lock.
  • Fold-away Feature: The mirrors are equipped with a fold-away feature designed to minimize damage to the mirror system and the door in the event of impact. If the bracket does not fold back, the upper fastener kit may require adjustment (refer to G.2). If it folds back too easily, the upper fastener kit is too loose and needs to be tightened.
  • Optional Flip-out Arm: For persistent mirror vibration, a third arm can be installed. This arm attaches to the top of the bracket and then to the door, requiring drilling two 17/32" holes and inserting two 5/16 – 18 Rivnuts.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning Mirror Glass: A standard glass cleaner and a soft, clean cloth should be used. Abrasive cleaners or brushes should be avoided to prevent scratching or damage to the mirror plate. The manual distinguishes between 1st surface glass (reflective surface is on the front) and 2nd surface glass (reflective surface is behind the glass).
  • Troubleshooting Mirror Movement: A detailed flowchart (T.2.1) guides users through diagnosing issues with remote mirror movement. This includes checking cable connections, motor presence, motor and linking component functionality, control cable function, bracket control cable continuity, and motor connector continuity. Lang-Mekra strongly recommends using a test unit (available through Freightliner Alliance group) for simplified troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshooting Mirror Heat: A flowchart (T.4.1) assists in diagnosing issues where the mirror plate does not heat. Steps include checking cable connections, heater wire attachment, heater spade security, and bracket control cable function.
  • Motor (Actuator) Replacement: The procedure involves removing the mirror plate (G.5.1), detaching the non-functioning motor, and removing the white stabilizer piece. Installation requires plugging wires into the new motor, attaching the white stabilizer piece, fastening the motor with six screws to 0.7-1.2 N-m, and reconnecting heater wires (if applicable).
  • Control Cable/CB Cable Replacement: When replacing cabling, the existing wiring should be used to route the new cable through the bracket tube. Technical support is available via a toll-free hotline (1-888-MEKRA-4-U).
  • AAT Sensor Replacement: If the AAT sensor is not working correctly, it can be replaced by depressing the black locking tab and pushing the sensor in towards the center of the carrier plate assembly for removal, and then pushing it outward until the tab is fully engaged for installation.
  • Surface Finishes: The paint on the bracket and holders is a flexible, weather-resistant powder coating. Chipped or otherwise damaged paint can be repaired using Dupont paint number 373-P-23290 for repainting of silhouette grey systems. For bright or chrome systems, a matching wet paint may be used.
  • Warranty Coverage: Lang-Mekra provides a warranty for production parts covering materials and workmanship, including part replacement, repair time, and administrative costs. The warranty does not cover glass breakage, impact damage, abuse, mistreatment, minor re-assembly, improper service, unauthorized alterations, unreasonable costs, or full mirror system replacement. Warranty claims for items with impact damage will be denied.
