Overview

This document describes the Metex 3600 Series Digital Multimeter, a precision electronic device designed for various electrical measurements in the field, laboratory, workshop, and home applications. This manual covers models 3610, 3620, 3630, and 3650.

Function Description

The Metex 3600 Series Digital Multimeter is a versatile instrument capable of measuring a wide range of electrical parameters. Its core function is to provide accurate readings for:

  • DC Voltage: Measures direct current voltage.
  • AC Voltage: Measures alternating current voltage.
  • DC Current: Measures direct current.
  • AC Current: Measures alternating current.
  • Resistance: Measures electrical resistance.
  • Diode Test: Checks the functionality of diodes.
  • Audible Continuity Test: Indicates continuity with an audible buzzer.
  • Transistor hFE Test (except 3620): Measures the DC current gain of transistors.
  • Capacitance Measurements (for 3630 and 3650): Measures capacitance.
  • Frequency Measurements (for 3650): Measures frequency.

The device utilizes a dual-slope A/D converter with C-MOS technology for auto-zeroing, polarity detection, and over-range indication, ensuring reliable and precise measurements.

Important Technical Specifications

The Metex 3600 Series multimeters feature a 3 1/2 digit LCD display, capable of showing a maximum count of 1999 with automatic polarity indication. The measuring method employs a dual-slope integration A/D converter.

  • Open Circuit Voltage: Less than 3V.

Usage Features

The Metex 3600 Series multimeters are designed for user-friendly operation with several convenient features:

  • Large LCD Display: A 3 1/2 digit, 7 mm high contrast LCD provides clear readings. An "1" figure on the left of the LCD indicates overrange.
  • Rotary Switch: A 30-position rotary switch allows for easy selection of function and range.
  • Power ON/OFF Switch: A dedicated button for powering the device on and off.
  • Input Jacks: Dedicated input jacks for V/Ω, COM, 20A (for 3610/3620), 200mA (for 3630/3650), and hFE measurements.
  • Overrange Indication: An automatic overrange indication displays "1" on the left of the LCD when the input exceeds the selected range.
  • High Voltage Protection: Rated for 1.5KV-3KV, ensuring safety during high voltage measurements.
  • Diode and Audible Continuity Test: Built-in functions for checking diodes and circuit continuity with an audible buzzer (less than 30 ohms).
  • Transistor hFE Test: A dedicated socket for testing NPN or PNP transistors (except 3620).
  • Capacitance Zero ADJ Knob: Allows for zero adjustment before capacitance measurements.
  • Low Battery Annunciator: An indicator on the LCD signals when the battery is low, prompting replacement.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes safety warnings, including avoiding electrical shock, using correct input terminals, and ensuring test leads are in good condition. It also warns against applying more than 1000V to the input and exceeding maximum input current ratings.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of the Metex 3600 Series multimeter.

  • Battery Replacement: When the low battery annunciator appears, the 9V battery should be replaced. This involves opening the back cover and replacing the battery with the same type.
  • Fuse Replacement: If the fuse is blown, it must be replaced with the correct type and rating: 2A (for 3610 & 3620) or 200mA (for 3630, 3650) for the main fuse, and 20A (for 3610 & 3620) or 200mA (for 3630 & 3650) for the spare fuse in the storage compartment.
  • Cleaning: The case should be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent, avoiding abrasives or solvents.
  • Calibration and Repair: The apparatus should be disconnected from voltage sources before any adjustment, replacement, or maintenance. Calibration and repair should only be performed by skilled personnel.
  • Warranty: The instrument is warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one year from the delivery date. The warranty does not cover expendable items such as batteries or fuses, or damage caused by misuse or abnormal operating conditions.
