Neverstartorleavetheenginerunningin
anunventilatedbuilding-exhaustgasesare
poisonousandcontaincarbonmonoxide,
whichcancauseunconsciousnessandmay
evenbefatal.
Catalyticconverterscanbedamagedifthe
wrongfuelisused,orifanenginemisre
occurs.Beforestartingtheengine,please
readcarefullytheprecautionsdetailedunder
thesection"CatalyticConverter".
OperationofStartingtheEngine:
1Switchoffallunnecessaryelectricalequipment
(includingtheairconditioning);
2Applytheparkingbrake(referto"BrakeSystem"of
thischapter);
3Ensureneutralisselectedandtheclutchpedalisfully
pressed;
4Insertthekeyandturntheignitionswitchclockwise
toposition3;thenreleasethekeyimmediatelyafter
theenginehasstarted.
Note:Continueduseofthestarterwillnotonly
dischargethebattery,butmaydamagethestarter
andcatalyticconverter.
Idlespeedwilldecreaseafterenginewarm-up.Donot
increaseenginespeedimmediatelyafterstartingtheengine.
Progressivelyoperatetheengineandtransmissionsothat
oilcanwarm-upandlubricatealloperatingcomponents.
DONOTpresstheacceleratorpedalwhilestartingand
DONOToperatethestarterformorethan15seconds
atatime.Iftheenginefailstostart,turnofftheignition
switchandwaitatleast10secondsbeforetryingagain.
Ifthekeyisnotrecognisedbytheengineimmobilisation
systemwhenitisinsertedintotheignitionswitch,the
enginewillbedisabled.Therelevantalarmiconand
"InvalidKey"willappearontheinformationcenter(refer
to"InformationCenter"in"InstrumentsandControls"
chapter).
ColdClimates
Intemperaturesof-10°Candbelow,enginecrankingtimes
willincrease.Itisessentialthatallunnecessaryelectrical
equipmentisswitchedoffwhilecranking.
