ComponentRemoval
Wheneverpossible,cleancomponentsandsurroundingarea
beforeremoval.
•Blankoffopeningsexposedbycomponentremoval.
•Immediatelysealfuel,oilorhydrauliclineswhen
aperturesareexposed;useplasticcapsorplugsto
preventlossofuidandingressofdirt.
•Closetheopenendsofoilwaysexposedbycomponent
removalwithtaperedhardwoodplugsorconspicuous
plasticplugs.
•Immediatelyacomponentisremoved,placeitina
suitablecontainer;useaseparatecontainerforeach
componentanditsassociatedparts.
•Cleanbenchandprovidemarkingmaterials,labelsand
containersbeforedismantlingacomponent.
Dismantling
Observescrupulouscleanlinesswhendismantlingcomponents,
particularlywhenbrake,fuelorhydraulicsystempartsare
beingworkedon.Aparticleofdirtoraclothfragmentcould
causeaseriousmalfunctioniftrappedinthesesystems.
•Blowoutalltappedholes,crevices,oilwaysanduid
passageswithanairline.EnsurethatanyO-ringsused
forsealingarecorrectlyreplacedorrenewed,ifdisturbed
duringtheprocess.
•Usemarkinginktoidentifymatingpartsandensure
correctreassembly.Donotuseacentrepunchor
scribertomarkparts,theycouldinitiatecracksor
distortioninmarkedcomponents.
•Wiretogethermatingpartswherenecessarytoprevent
accidentalinterchange(e.g.rollerbearingcomponents).
•Attachlabelstoallpartswhicharetoberenewed,and
topartsrequiringfurtherinspectionbeforebeingpassed
forreassembly;placethesepartsinseparatecontainers
fromthosecontainingpartsforrebuild.
•Donotdiscardapartdueforrenewaluntilafter
comparingitwithanewpart,toensurethatitscorrect
replacementhasbeenobtained.
CleaningComponents
Alwaysusetherecommendedcleaningagentorequivalent.
Ensurethatadequateventilationisprovidedwhenvolatile
degreasingagentsarebeingused.Donotusedegreasing
equipmentforcomponentscontainingitemswhichcouldbe
damagedbytheuseofthisprocess.
GeneralInspection
Allcomponentsshouldbeinspectedforwearordamage
beforebeingreassembled.
•Neverinspectacomponentforwearordimensional
checkunlessitisabsolutelyclean;aslightsmearofgrease
canconcealanincipientfailure.
•Whenacomponentistobecheckeddimensionally
againstrecommendedvalues,usetheappropriate
measuringequipment(surfaceplates,micrometers,
dialgaugesetc.).Ensurethemeasuringequipmentis
calibratedandingoodserviceablecondition.
•Rejectacomponentifitsdimensionsareoutsidethe
speciedtolerances,orifitappearstobedamaged.
•Apartmayberettedifitscriticaldimensionisexactly
toitstolerancelimitanditappearstobeinsatisfactory
condition.Use'Plastigauge'forcheckingbearingsurface
clearances.
