The
ECMmonitorstheconditionsrequiredforoptimum
combustionoffuelinthecylindersusingsensorslocatedat
pointsaroundtheengine.Fromthesesensorinputs,theECM
cancontrolandadjustthefuelquantityandtimingofthefuel
beingdeliveredtoeachcylinder.
TheECMcontainsanElectronicallyErasableProgrammable
ReadOnlyMemory(EEPROM)whichisprogrammedwithdata
requiredtoruntheengine.TheECMreceivesandstoresa
vehiclespecicsecuritycodefromtheimmobilisationmodule
duringproduction.TheECMcannotfunctionunlessitECMis
connectedtoanimmobilisationmodulewiththesamecode.
WhenreplacinganECMinservice,thenewunitissupplied
'blank'andmustbeprogrammedusingthediagnostictool.The
newunitmustlearnthesecuritycodefromtheimmobilisation
module.

Withtheignitionon,theECMprimesthefuelsystemby
runningthefuelpumpforapproximatelytwoseconds.This
isachievedbycompletingthegroundpathforthefuelpump
relaycoil.TheECMreferencesthesensorspriortostartup.
WhenthehandsetismovedtotheCRANKposition,theECM
communicateswiththeimmobilisationmodule.Ifitreceives
authoritytostart,theECMbeginsignitionandfuellingwhen
CKPandCMPsensorsignalsaredetected.TheECMwill
operatethefuelpumpcontinuouslywhenavalidCKPsensor
signalisreceived.
