General
Themajorsteeringcomponentscompriseatwostage
collapsiblesteeringcolumn,apowerassistedsteeringrack,a
pump,apressuresensor,auidreservoir,auidcoolerand
uidpipesandhoses.
SteeringRack
Thesteeringrackismountedintheoptimumposition,low
ontherearcrossmemberofthefrontsubframe.Astherack
mountingpointsandsuspensionpivotpointsarealldened
bytheaccuraterigidsubframe,thedesignedgeometric
relationshipsaremaintainedatalltimes.Therackisretained
withtwoboltsthroughcastlugsnearthevalveunitandtwo
boltswhichsecureaclampxedtotheoppositeendofthe
rack.A'DoubleD'arrangementtogetherwithanutand
camboltsecuresthesteeringcolumntothesteeringrack
pinion.Therackrequires2.81turnsfromlocktolockandthe
rackandpinionhasanoverallratioof16:1.Rubbergaiters
protectthemovementareaoftherack.T rackrodends,tted
tothreadedtierodsandsecuredwithlocknutsprovidefor
theadjustmentoffrontwheelsteeringalignment.Eachtrack
rodendissecuredbyalocknuttothesteeringarm,which
extendsfromthefronthub.

Thevalveunitisanintegralpartofthesteeringrack.The
principalfunctionofthevalveunitistoprovidemaximum
powerassistance(i.e.;whenparking)withminimumeffort
requiredtoturnthesteeringwheel.
Thecastoutercasingofthevalveunithasfourportswhich
providetheconnectionsforpressurefeedfromthepump,
returntotheuidreservoirandpressurefeedfromthevalve
unittotheannulusandfullareaofthecylinder.Anonreturn
valveandsealisttedinthepressurefeedportfromthePAS
pump.
Thevalveunitcomprisesanoutersleeve,rotor,torsionbar
andapinionshaft.Thevalveunitiscoaxialwiththepinionshaft
whichisconnectedtothesteeringcolumnviatheinputshaft.
Thevalveunitcomponentsarelocatedinahousingwhichis
screwedtoamatingcastingonthesteeringrackmainbody
andsecuredwithscrews.
