Allsystemoperationsbecomeactivewhentheignitionison
andremainoperationalwhentheengineisstarted.When
thehandsetisdocked,the
SRSwarninglightilluminatesfor
approximately4secondsandthenturnsoff,thisindicatesthat
thesystemisfunctional.
FrontImpacts
Thefrontairbagsandtheseatbeltpretensionersaredeployed
intheeventofafrontalimpactofsufcientseveritytoexceed
theSRSECUimpacttriggerthreshold.
WhentheaccelerometerandsangsensorintheSRS
electroniccontrolunitsenseanimpact,theelectroniccontrol
unittriggersthefrontairbagmodulesbysendinganelectric
currenttoanigniter:
Driver'sfrontairbag:theigniterinitiatesgasproduction
inthepropellantcausingairbagination.
Frontpassenger’sairbag:theigniterinitiatesgas
productioninthepropellantcausingairbagination.
Theairbagshaveventholestodischargethegastoprovide
progressivedecelerationforthemovingoccupantandthus
reducetheriskofinjury.
SRSECUtriggerstheseatbeltpretensioneroperationforthe
frontseatbelts.
TheSRSECUtriggerstheseatbeltpretensioner
operationforthefrontseatbelts.Thisisachievedby
activatingapropellantthatactsonamechanisminthe
seatbeltinertiareel.Thisreducesslackfromtheseat
belt.Thiscausesanincreaseinthetensionoftheseat
belttorestraintheoccupantinasecurepositionduring
impact.
Theseatbeltpretensionersareequippedwithsafesensor,
andtheactingtimeisshorterthanthefrontairbag,thenit
canrestraintheoccupantintheseatbeforetheairbagwhole
explore.
SRSECUisabletodistinguishbetweenroughroadconditions
andafrontalcollision.Ifthemainsensordetectsafrontal
collisionofsufcientseverity,theSRSECUsendsanelectric
currenttotheairbagmodulesandseatbeltpre-tensioners.
SideImpacts
Theside(thorax)airbagsandtheheadairbagsaredeployedin
theeventofasideimpactofsufcientseveritytoexceedthe
sideimpacttriggerthreshold.WhentheSRSECUreceivesa
signalfromoneofthesideimpactcrashsensorsanddetectsan
impact,theSRSECUactivatestheside(thorax)airbagmodule
andtheheadcurtainairbagmoduleonthesideofthevehicle
sufferingtheimpact.AcurrentfromtheSRSECUtriggersthe
moduletoigniteaquantityofgaspropellant.Theexpanding
gascausesairbagination.Theinatingside(thorax)airbag
burststhroughtheseatcoverattheoutboardseam.Atthe
sametime,theheadairbagmoduledeploysfrombeneaththe
headliningtrimtoprotecttheoccupantfromheadinjuries.
Thesideairbagsofferadditionalprotectiontotheoccupants
intheeventofacollisionactingonthesideofthevehicle.
Eitherthedriver'ssideairbagorthepassenger'ssideairbag
isactivateddependingonthesideofthevehiclesufferingthe
impact.Theairbagsprogressivelydeatethegasfromvent
holestoreducetheriskofinjuries.
FrontAngledImpacts
Thedeploymentofairbagsandseatbeltpretensionersthat
occurwhenavehicleisinvolvedinafrontangledcollisionis
dependentonthespeedandangleoftheimpact.Different
conditionscouldapply:
IfimpactisbelowthethresholdfortheSRSECUsensors
thesystemgivesnoresponse,noneoftheairbagsorseat
beltpre-tensionersareactivated.
Ifthespeedandangleoftheimpactisinexcessof
thefrontimpacttriggerthreshold,thedriver'sairbag,
passenger'sfrontairbagandseatbeltpre-tensionersare
activated.
RearImpact
Iftheimpactexceedstherearimpacttriggerthreshold,then
theseatbeltpre-tensionersareactivated.
LampCheck
TheSRSwarninglightilluminatesaftertheignitionswitch
hasbeenswitchedoninordertoprovidealampcheck.
Afterabout4seconds,thewarninglightwillgooutforthe
remainderoftheignitioncycle,providingtheSRSsystem
integrityismaintained.Thesystemcheckstheconditionof
theSRSECU,sideimpactcrashsensorsandSRSharnesses.
SystemContinuityFault
Ifoneofthefollowingfaultsareexperiencedwhentheignition
ison,thentheSRSwarninglightwillilluminateandremainon
forthedurationoftheignitioncycle:
SRSECUfault
Harnessfault
Earthconnectionfault
Opencircuitfault
Airbagfault
Pre-tensionerfault
Ifthevehicleismoving,systemmonitorsthefault,thewarning
lightwillilluminedtoshowthefaultof
SRSsystem.Whenthe
warninglightison,theSRSwillnotwork,whenthecrashis
happened.
