Overview

The Milwaukee M18 FJS is a cordless jigsaw designed for heavy-duty cutting applications, offering portability and robust performance. It is part of the M18 FUEL line, indicating that it utilizes Milwaukee's brushless motor technology, REDLITHIUM battery pack, and REDLINK PLUS intelligence, which together provide extended run-time, power, and durability.

Function Description

The primary function of the M18 FJS is to cut various materials such as wood, metal, and plastics with precision and efficiency. It achieves this through a reciprocating saw blade that moves rapidly up and down. The tool is designed for both straight and curved cuts, making it versatile for a wide range of tasks from intricate scrollwork to rough cutting. Its cordless nature allows for freedom of movement without the need for a power outlet, enhancing its utility in diverse work environments.

Usage Features

The M18 FJS incorporates several features to enhance user experience and cutting performance:

  • Battery System: The jigsaw operates on Milwaukee's M18 REDLITHIUM battery packs. To install a battery, slide it into the tool's battery slot until it clicks securely into place. To remove, press the release button and slide the battery out. The battery packs feature a fuel gauge, allowing users to check the remaining charge level by pressing a button. The indicator lights show the charge status: 78-100%, 55-77%, 33-54%, 10-32%, and <10%. When the charge is low, the battery should be removed and placed in a charger.

  • Blade Installation and Removal: The tool features a Fixtec holder for quick and tool-free blade changes. To install a blade, push the saw blade into the Fixtec holder until it stops and clicks into place. It's crucial to ensure the blade is fully seated and secure. To remove a blade, push the lever on the Fixtec holder and pull the blade out. Always remove the battery pack before performing any work on the machine, including blade changes, to prevent accidental starts.

  • Dust Extraction/Blower: The M18 FJS is equipped with a dust blower function to keep the cutting line clear of debris, improving visibility and accuracy. This feature can be activated or deactivated as needed. For more extensive dust management, the tool can be connected to a dust extraction system. An adapter is available to connect various vacuum hoses (e.g., AS 2-250, AS 300, AS-30, AS-42) to the chip ejection opening. Regularly cleaning the chip ejection opening is recommended for optimal performance.

  • Orbital Action Control: The jigsaw offers adjustable orbital action settings, typically ranging from 0 (straight cut) to 3 (maximum orbital action). Orbital action moves the blade in an elliptical path, which can significantly increase cutting speed in softer materials like wood, but may result in a rougher cut. For finer cuts or harder materials like metal, a lower or no orbital action setting is preferred. The appropriate setting depends on the material and desired cut quality.

  • Bevel Cutting: The base plate of the jigsaw can be adjusted for bevel cuts, allowing for angled cuts up to 45 degrees on either side. The base plate has markings (e.g., 45, 30, 15, 0, 15, 30, 45) to guide the user in setting the desired angle. To adjust the bevel angle, loosen the base plate, tilt it to the desired angle, and then secure it.

  • Speed Control: The tool features variable speed control, often managed by a trigger or a dial, allowing users to match the cutting speed to the material and application. Slower speeds are generally used for harder materials, intricate cuts, or when starting a cut, while higher speeds are suitable for faster cutting in softer materials.

  • LED Light: An integrated LED light illuminates the workpiece, improving visibility in dimly lit areas and enhancing cutting accuracy.

  • Start/Stop and Lock-off Function: The jigsaw is operated by a trigger switch. To start the tool, press the trigger. To stop, release the trigger. A lock-off button is typically present to prevent unintentional starting of the tool. To unlock, press the lock-off button, then press the trigger. For continuous operation, some models may have a lock-on feature, allowing the trigger to be held in the "on" position without constant pressure. The tool also features an insulated gripping surface to protect the user from electric shock in case the cutting accessory contacts hidden wiring.

  • Cutting Guides and Accessories: Various accessories, such as splinter guards and anti-scratch shoes, can be attached to the base plate to improve cut quality and protect the workpiece. A splinter guard helps prevent tear-out, especially in wood, by providing support close to the blade. An anti-scratch shoe protects delicate surfaces from being marred by the base plate.

  • Plunge Cutting: The M18 FJS is capable of plunge cutting, which involves starting a cut in the middle of a workpiece without a pilot hole. This technique requires careful handling and a specific procedure: position the front edge of the base plate on the workpiece, tilt the tool so the blade is clear of the surface, start the tool, and slowly lower the blade into the material. This is typically done with wood.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the M18 FJS:

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the tool, especially the chip ejection opening, to prevent sawdust and debris buildup, which can hinder performance and potentially cause overheating. Use a brush or compressed air to remove dust from ventilation slots.

  • Battery Care: Store battery packs in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid storing them with metal objects to prevent short-circuiting. Do not store battery packs with a charge below 10% for extended periods, as this can lead to deep discharge and damage. For long-term storage, it's recommended to store battery packs at a partial charge (e.g., 50-70%).

  • Blade Inspection: Regularly inspect saw blades for sharpness and damage. Dull or damaged blades can lead to poor cut quality, increased effort, and potential safety hazards. Replace blades as needed.

  • General Inspection: Periodically check the tool for any signs of damage, loose screws, or worn parts. Ensure all safety features, such as the lock-off button and blade guard, are functioning correctly.

  • Lubrication: The tool is designed for maintenance-free operation, and lubrication by the user is generally not required. Refer to the manual for any specific lubrication instructions if applicable.

  • Disposal: When the tool reaches the end of its life, it should be disposed of responsibly. Do not dispose of power tools or batteries with household waste. They should be collected separately and returned to an environmentally compatible recycling facility. Check with local authorities or retailers for recycling advice.
