Depth-of-Field
At
any
aperture a
lens
will
give
sharp
focus for
a
certain
distance
both behind
and
in
f
ront
of
the
subject.
This
distance
is known as
the'depthof-
field'. The
smaller
the aperture
the
greater
the
depth-of-field,
Also,
lenses
with
a short
focal
length,
such
as wide
angle
lenses,
have
a
greater
depth-of
-f
ield
than
ones with a
longer
focal length,
such
as
telephoto
lenses.
Depth-of-f
ield
scale
A
depth-of
-f
ield
scale
is
engraved on
the respec-
tive
lenses.
When
the
camera
is
,
f
or
example,
f
ocused
on a subject at
the
distance,
e.g.,3m
with the aperture
set
at
f/8,
the subjects
located
within
B
at both
sides
of the
"1"
mark
(approx.
2m
in
the
f ront
range and
approx.
5m
in
the
rear range)
are sharp
and clear.
