Chapter 7 Part A Manual transmission
4.3a Transmission mount (2WD models)
4 If the transmission is a 5-speed, place the shift lever in the first gear
position. If it is a 4-speed, place it in the second gear position. Remove the
three boltsattaching theshiftleverassemblytothetransmissionandcare-
fully lift out the lever. Plug or cover the hole with a clean rag.
Installation
5 Apply a thin coat of RTV sealant to both sides of the two gaskets (one
over and one under the shift lever stopper plate).
6 Apply multi-purpose grease to the shift lever bushing and all shift le-
ver sliding surfaces.
7 The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the
fasteners securely.
4 Transmission mount - check and repl.acement
Refer to illustrations 4.3a and 4.3b
Check
1
insert a large screwdriver or pry bar into the space between the trans-
mission extension housing and the crossmember and try to pry up slightly.
2 The transmission should not move from the crossmember. If there is
any cracking or separation of the rubber from the mounting plate, replace
the mount
Replacement
3 Support the transmission with a jack. Place a block of wood on the
jack head to serve as a cushion. Remove the fasteners attaching the
mount to the crossmember and the transmission
(see illustrations).
4 Raise the transmission slightly with the jack and remove the mount:
5 Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to tighten the nuts/bolts
securely.
5 Manual transmission - removal and installatjon
Removal
1
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
2 Remove the air cleaner assembly (see Chapter 4), then remove the
starter (see Chapter 5).
3 Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Place a drain
pan under the transmission, remove the drain plug and allow the transmis-
sion to lubricant to drain.
4 Remove the driveshaft (see Chapter 8).
5 Remove the shift lever (see Section 3).
6 Disconnect the speedometer cable where it enters the transmission.
Bend back the retaining strap that holds the speedometer cable housing to

the frame crossmember and pull the speedometer cable away from the
engine and transmission. Lay it on top of the left frame rail to keep’it out of
the way.
7 Push forward on the parking brake lever and disengage the cable
from the lever. Loosen the parking brake cable housing clamp in front of
the frame crossmember and slide the cable housing forward to free it from
the support bracket on the crossmember. Lay the cable on top of the left
frame rail to keep it out of the way. Remove the pin attaching the rear park-
ing brake cable balancer to the parking brake lever.
8 Unplug the electrical connector for the back-up light switch (just be-
hind the steering box). Disconnect the clutch cable from the clutch control
lever at the transmission bellhousing. Back off the clutch cable adjuster
.and put as much freeplay as possible in the cable. Pull the rubberdustcov-
er from the end of the clutch cable and slip the cable through the mounting
bosson thetransmission bellhousing. Laytheclutchcableon topoftheleft
frame rail to keep it out of the way.
9 Remove the splash shield from the front of the transmission. It is at-
tached to the engine with two bolts and to the transmission with two bolts.
10 Remove the bolt attaching the exhaust pipe bracket to the transmis-
sion.
11 Support the engine with a hoist or, if a hoist ish’t available, a floorjack
placed under the engine oil pan (place a wood block on the jack head to
serve as a cushion). Remove the bolts that attach the transmission bell-
housing to the engine block.
12 Remove the two nuts that attach the transmission to the transmission
support crossmember.
13 Support the transmission with a sturdy jack (preferably one equipped
with wheels or casters). Remove the transmission supportcrossmember.
14 Carefully move the transmission straight back and away from the en-
gine by moving the transmission supporting jack toward the rear of the ve-
hicle. It would be very helpful to have an assistant at this point. You must
pull the transmission straight back until it is completely free from the en-
gine or damage to the input shaft may result.
15 Slowly lower the jack and move the transmission out from under the
vehide.
Installation
16 ‘Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to check the clutch disc
to make sure it is centered (see Chapter 8) before sliding the transmission
into place. Also, before installation, apply a coat of lithium-based grease to
the end of the transmission input shaft and the splines.
17 With the help of ari assistant, line up the clutch with the transmission
input shaft. Make sure the engine and transmission are in a straight line,
not angled in relation, to each other. Carefully slide the transmission for-
ward until the bellhousing contacts the engine block. To properly engage
the clutch disc and the transmission input shaft, you may have to rotate the
crankshaft slightly (with a wrench on the bolt holding the pulley to the front
of the crankshaft). Do not force the input shaft into the clutch. If the trans-
