Repairing a Torn Encoder
Ribbon
4
Repairing a torn ribbon is much like the previously described “Replacing the
Encoder Ribbon”. To perform this operation, you need:
• a pair of scissors
• a roll of transparent adhesive tape
• a spare ribbon leader
1 Open the encoder door, then locate the ribbon guide.
2 Insert the ribbon guide into the track slot.
3 Push the dancer arm back, then release the latch and pull up the ribbon
cassette.
4 Pull the ribbon cassette up out of the frame, then push it back to latch on
the dancer arm.
5 Pull the take up (bottom) spool out of the front of the cassette and wind
the ribbon onto it.
6 Turn the top spool toward you to pull the broken end of the ribbon out
of the encoder.
7 Cut the ragged end from the ribbon, then tape the spare ribbon leader
onto the end of the ribbon. Put the tape on the shiny side of the ribbon.
8 Push the leader straight into the ribbon slot until it appears below the
ribbon spool.
9 Pull the leader and about least 30 cm (12 inches) of black ribbon is visible
from below the spool. Remove the leader from the ribbon.
10 Tape the unused ribbon end to the end of the ribbon on the take-up spool
(which you set aside earlier). Make sure the gear wheel of the take-up
spool is on the right. Put the tape on the shiny side of the ribbon.
