Introducing the Transport
Overview

• a reader module – this module reads information preprinted on the
documents in MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) or OCR
(optical character recognition) letters and numbers.
Encoder Module
1
Next comes the encoder module. In most models of the transport, this module
contains an encoder. The encoder is a kind of printer that prints additional
information on the documents (in MICR or OCR characters) so that they can
be further processed by other machines.
There are two different kinds of encoders, the high-speed encoder, and the
low-speed encoder.
If your transport is not used for encoding, the encoder module contains no
encoder, and just passes the documents down the track.
Graphical Endorser Module
1
This module, to+ the right of the encoder, contains either one rear endorser
or one front/rear endorser. These endorsers print other information on the
documents, usually to meet legal requirements.
MICR Verifier Module
1
If your transport has a MICR verifier module, it is just to the right of the
endorser module. This optional module checks to be sure the encoder is
working correctly.
Downstream Image-Lift
Module
1
If your transport has a Downstream Image-Lift Module (ILM), it is just to
the right of the endorser module. This optional module captures digital
images of the front and/or back of the documents after they have been
encoded and endorsed. You will primarily use these captured images to
archive and store information found on the documents.
Pocket modules
1
Finally, your transport has 1 to 10 pocket modules, each with four pockets
(compartments that the documents are sorted into).
Keyboard and Transport
Controller PC
1
To operate your transport, you use a keyboard that sits on the flat surface in
front of you. (There are two different kinds of keyboards, described later in
this chapter.) The keyboard sends your commands to a computer (transport
controller), located underneath the transport. The transport controller in turn
tells the transport what to do and displays information for you on the transport
screen.
Display Monitor
1
The transport has a standard flat-screen LCD color monitor or an optional
touch-screen version.
