Introducing the Transport
Low-Speed Encoder

Low-Speed Encoder
1
The low-speed encoder module is just to the right of the reader module.
In most models of the transport, this module contains an encoder. An encoder
is a kind of printer that prints additional information on the documents (in
MICR or OCR characters) so that they can be further processed by other
machines. The low-speed encoder consists of a set of printing wires that melt
ink onto the documents. It prints either the E-13B or the CMC 7 MICR font,
or the OCR-A or OCR-B OCR font.
You can recognize a low-speed encoder by the clear wheel on the right-hand
side of the ribbon drive.
If your transport is not used for encoding, the encoder module contains no
encoder. Instead, it has a stager where it receives documents from the reader
module and passes them on to the endorser module. If the transport controller
tells it to, the encoder module can also stop documents temporarily to smooth
out the flow down the track.
Taking Care of the Encoder
1
When the encoder ribbon is almost used up or has broken, your transport
stops moving documents, and a message appears on your screen.
For instructions on replacing and repairing the encoder ribbon, see Chapter
Four.
For instructions on cleaning the metering roll, see Chapter Three.
