If you are changing the encoding ribbon more frequently while processing
the same amount of documents, excessive ribbon spacing (too much space
between lines on the encoder ribbon) may be the cause.
When replacing the encoder ribbon, check the old ribbon to see if the space
between lines is consistently normal. You can eliminate excess spacing by
cleaning the metering roll, as follows:
1 Open the encoder door.
2 Lift the ribbon roll off the feed spool and set it down on top of the cabinet
behind the metering roll.
3 Use a piece of adhesive tape to remove dust and lint from the metering
roll. Apply the tape to the metering roll, rub it lightly with one finger,
then peel it off. Repeat until you have cleaned the entire roll.
4 Reinstall the ribbon roll as described in “Low-Speed Encoder: Replacing
the Encoder Ribbon”, in the chapter “Replacing Parts and Supplies”.
