Take a clear picture of the thermostat wires and their terminal labels for reference.
Learn to recognize and avoid using incompatible wiring like stranded or high-voltage wires.
Enter your thermostat's wire connectors into the online checker for a custom wiring diagram.
Remove any jumper wires connecting terminals on the old thermostat as they are not needed.
Connect system wires to the appropriate terminals on the Nest base according to the wiring diagram.
Turn the power back on at the breaker box or system switch to power the thermostat.
