Remove the NovoPen 3 from its case by pressing down on the pen cap and twisting to separate it from the barrel.
Unscrew and remove the cartridge holder from the barrel.
Press the push button fully until zero appears in the window, aligned with the stripe.
Ensure the piston rod is flat against the reset mechanism; turn clockwise if sticking out.
Push the cartridge through the foil side of the packaging. Check for fullness and intactness before use.
For Novolin 70/30 or Novolin N, mix insulin by turning the cartridge up and down 10+ times until uniformly white.
Hold cartridge holder with wider opening up. Drop cartridge into holder, plastic cap first.
Screw the barrel into the cartridge holder completely until it is tight.
Check inspection windows to see if rear rubber stopper is visible; if not, enough insulin for mixing.
For Novolin 70/30 or Novolin N, turn NovoPen 3 up and down 10 times until uniformly white and cloudy.
Wipe the front rubber stopper with an alcohol swab before each injection, even with the same cartridge.
Remove the protective tab from the needle and screw it firmly onto the PenFill cartridge until tight.
To prevent air injection and ensure correct insulin delivery, an air shot must be done before each injection.
Turn the dial-a-dose selector to 2 units for the air shot procedure. Do not turn back to zero if more than 2 units are dialed.
Pull off outer needle cap, discard inner cap. Hold pen with needle upward and tap cartridge holder to raise air bubbles.
Press the push button all the way in. Insulin should appear at the needle tip. Repeat steps if no insulin appears.
Check that the dial-a-dose selector is zero. Turn it to select the correct number of units in the dose indicator window.
If wrong dose is set, grasp holder and barrel, pull holder down, press push button to reset to zero.
Insert the needle into site, press push button fully. Keep needle in skin for seconds after injection.
If dose indicator doesn't show zero, get remaining dose by following steps to replace cartridge and redial.
Carefully replace outer needle cap, unscrew needle while holding holder firmly, and dispose in a puncture-resistant container.
Align the pen cap's clip with the dose indicator window and gently slide it onto the barrel.
Remove pen cap, hold pen with dose indicator at top, unscrew barrel from cartridge holder.
Tip holder to eject cartridge. Press push button to zero, turn reset mechanism clockwise if piston rod sticks out.
Regularly check NovoPen 3 functioning, e.g., monthly, by delivering 20 units into the outer needle cap.
Attach needle, perform air shot, and expel 20 units into the outer needle cap to verify operation.
Place the outer needle cap securely over the exposed NovoFine needle, do not replace the inner needle cap.
Turn dial-a-dose selector to show 20 units, then press push button to expel into the outer needle cap.
Hold pen downward, press push button fully. Check dose indicator window to see if it shows zero.
Insulin filling the bottom of the cap indicates proper function. Review and repeat if results are unclear or improper.
Store at room temperature, away from extreme temperatures. Store pen without needle attached and with cap on.
Clean with alcohol-moistened cloth. Protect from dust, dirt, and moisture when not in its case.
Do not soak in alcohol, wash in soap/water, lubricate, expose to pressure/blows, or drop the device.
Not for visually impaired without assistance. Use separate pens for different insulin types. Keep out of reach of children.
Use only recommended Novo Nordisk products. Novo Nordisk not responsible for use with non-recommended items.
Self-administration age assessment by caregiver. Keep pen away from extreme temperatures.
Ensure correct cartridge, sufficient insulin for mixing, and perform air shot with needle pointing upward.
Check dose indicator post-injection, remove needle promptly, select dose via window, and perform function checks.
Do not attach needle until ready, remove immediately. Do not use clicking sound, refill cartridges, or share cartridges.
Test blood glucose frequently. Make insulin changes cautiously and under medical supervision.
If dose indicator doesn't show zero, you did not receive the full dose. Follow steps to get the remaining part.
Check piston rod, needle attachment, or blockages. Repeat air shot or change needle if needed.
Screw piston rod back into barrel; do not push it to avoid damaging the mechanism.
If push button or piston rod won't return to zero, the mechanism may be locked; turn side to side to unlock.
