Application Type 2 Installation Guidelines
Direct Vent
(combustion air drawn
from the outside)
With the Direct Vent application, the water heater can be installed in enclosed areas, such as a
closet or other areas with limited space.
If installing in an enclosed space such as a closet, make sure to follow the clearance requirements
described in the manual in the section titled LOCATION AND CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS.
To prevent freezing damage to the water heater, it is strongly recommended to con gure
the air intake pipe so that it allows warming of the cold air being drawn from the outside.
See Figure 2 below for an example of such a con guration.*

FREEZE DAMAGE RECOMMENDATION RELATED TO EXHAUST PIPING
2
Whether using the Non-Direct Vent or Direct Vent application for the air intake, it is also important to protect the
water heater against freeze damage at the point of the exhaust piping. For this reason, it is recommend to install
a damper in the exhaust piping run to prevent cold air from reaching the water heater.
The Z-Flex Z-Vent 3-in Horizontal Vent Kit for Gas Tankless Water Heaters (2ZEWD03A), which includes an appliance
adapter with a damper, is recommended for exhaust piping for the Onsen 14L.
As shown in Figure 2, the air intake pipe run helps to prevent cold air from reaching the water heater due to the
following confi guration elements:
The signifi cant length of the air intake pipe run, which allows warming of the cold air before it reaches the water
heater.
The vertical run of the air intake pipe, which helps to keep the cold air at the top of the pipe and away from the water
heater when it is not being operated.
