The Urbalive by Plastia device is a versatile system designed for home cultivation of microgreens, regrow vegetables, and avocado/onion plants. It offers a sustainable approach to growing fresh produce indoors year-round.
Function Description
The device primarily functions as a multi-purpose indoor growing system. It allows users to:
- Grow Microgreens: Cultivate small, nutrient-rich plants like watercress, rocket, radish, cabbage, broccoli, kohlrabi, and mustard from seeds.
- Regrow Vegetables: Utilize kitchen scraps of root vegetables (carrot, parsley, celery, radish, beet), stalk celery, fennel, spring onion, onion, garlic, and leek to grow new tops.
- Grow Avocados/Onions: Sprout avocado stones or onions in water.
The system is designed to create an optimal environment for germination and growth, providing plants with necessary nutrients, water, and light.
Important Technical Specifications
The Urbalive system includes various components for its different functions:
- Microgreens Kit:
- Cap (A): Used to create a microclimate for initial germination.
- Shallow Strainer (B): Holds the growing medium (perlan or gel) and seeds.
- Deep Strainer (C): Supports the shallow strainer and collects excess water.
- Plant Saucer (D): The base of the unit, holding the deep strainer.
- Dimensions: The deep strainer has a diameter of 16 cm and a height of 7.7 cm.
- Microgreens + Regrow Kit:
- 2x Caps (A): For covering microgreens.
- 2x Shallow Strainers (B): For microgreens.
- 5x Variable Ribs (C): These snap into the deep strainers to hold regrow vegetables. They can be adjusted to accommodate different vegetable sizes, with longitudinal grooves in the deep strainer allowing for varied placement. Placing ribs further from the center creates more space in the middle of the deep strainer.
- 2x Deep Strainers (D): Used for both microgreens and regrow.
- 1x Plant Saucer (E): The base for the combined system.
- Dimensions: The deep strainer has a diameter of 16 cm and a height of 7.7 cm. The overall combined unit has a length of 30.5 cm.
- Avocado/Onion Bowl (A): An accessory that can be placed into the deep strainer or on a separate glass/container for sprouting avocados or onions.
- Materials: All product components are made from food-contact safe and BPA-free materials. Some products may include a 10% admixture of coffee grounds regranulate, which gives a grainy appearance and slight color variance.
Usage Features
Growing Microgreens with Perlan:
- Insert the deep strainer (C) into the plant saucer (D).
- Insert the shallow strainer (B) into the deep strainer (C).
- Place perlan (cellulose fiber) onto the shallow strainer (B) and spray it with water until wet.
- Spread seeds evenly over the perlan surface (approx. 5g or a full teaspoon for the shallow strainer surface).
- Cover with the cap (A) for the first few days.
- Bedew seeds regularly (2-4 times a day) to keep perlan wet.
- Once plants reach the edge of the deep strainer (C), remove the cap.
- Harvest microgreens on days 6-10 by trimming them about 1 cm above the perlan. The shallow strainer can be removed for easier trimming.
- Optimal temperature for germination and growth is +18 - 24 °C.
Growing Microgreens with Gel:
- Insert the deep strainer (C) into the plant saucer (D).
- Insert the shallow strainer (B) into the deep strainer (C).
- Pour gel into a 300 ml container, add 170 ml of water, and stir thoroughly.
- Wait 5 minutes for the gel to thicken, then transfer it to the shallow strainer (B).
- Spread and smooth the gel evenly in the shallow strainer (B).
- Spread one packet of seeds (or approx. 5g of your own seeds) evenly onto the gel layer.
- Cover the kit with the cap (A) for about 48 hours to establish a microclimate, allowing fine roots to appear.
- After 48 hours, remove the cap and expose the kit to natural light.
- Bedew seeds regularly (2-4 times a day) to keep the gel wet.
- Harvest microgreens on days 6-10 by trimming them evenly at the top edge of the deep strainer.
- Optimal temperature for germination and growth is +18 - 24 °C.
Regrowing Vegetables:
- Snap the variable ribs (B) into the deep strainer (C), adjusting their position based on the size of the vegetable scrap.
- Insert the deep strainer with ribs (C+B) into the plant saucer (D).
- Arrange vegetable scraps in the deep strainer between the ribs (C+B).
- Add water up to the indicated mark on the inner side of the deep strainer (C).
- Change water daily and replenish as needed.
- Process new plant tops as they appear.
Growing Avocados/Onions:
- Place the avocado/onion bowl (A) into the deep strainer (C) or a suitable container (glass, bowl, large cup).
- Insert the avocado/onion, ensuring it is immersed uniformly up to a maximum of 5 mm above the root level.
- Once roots appear, only wet the roots to prevent rotting.
- Change water daily and replenish as needed.
Maintenance Features
- Cleaning: The product requires no special maintenance. All parts can be washed in warm water with dish soap, rinsed thoroughly, and air-dried. The kit is also dishwasher safe up to 50 °C.
- Disposal: All components should be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner, in accordance with local laws. Perlan and gel with plant residues can be composted or disposed of in a biowaste bin.
- Guarantee: The product comes with a 24-month guarantee from the date of purchase, covering material or manufacturing defects. The guarantee is valid only when the product is used according to the instructions.
