Overview

The Portland Electric Pole Saw is a versatile gardening appliance designed for trimming branches and saplings. It features a powerful 1.5 Peak HP electric motor, making it suitable for various cutting tasks in outdoor environments. The pole saw is designed for ease of use and safety, with several features aimed at protecting the operator and ensuring efficient operation.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Portland Electric Pole Saw is to cut branches and saplings, particularly those that are out of reach. It consists of a main body housing the electric motor, an extendable pole for reaching higher branches, and a cutting head equipped with a guide bar and saw chain. The saw chain is automatically lubricated during operation, ensuring smooth cutting and prolonging the life of the chain and guide bar. The pole saw is designed for use with an outdoor-rated extension cord, providing flexibility in terms of reach within the work area. It is specifically intended for cutting wood and should not be used for other materials like plastic, masonry, or non-wood building materials. The tool is not designed for bore cutting, felling, or bucking.

Usage Features:

  • Extendable Pole: The pole saw features an adjustable extension collar, allowing the operator to extend the pole to the desired length for reaching high branches. This feature enhances versatility and reduces the need for ladders or other unstable supports.
  • Safety Controls: The tool is equipped with a Trigger Safety Lock, which must be pushed and held before the trigger can be squeezed to start the saw. This prevents unintentional starting and enhances user safety.
  • Automatic Oiler: An automatic oiler reservoir ensures continuous lubrication of the saw chain and guide bar during operation. The oil level can be monitored via an oil level gauge, and the reservoir should be filled with bar and chain oil (or SAE 30W motor oil if not available) before each use and periodically during operation.
  • Ergonomic Design: The pole saw is designed to be held with both hands, with thumbs and fingers encircling the handles, to maintain a firm grip and resist kickback forces. It includes a main handle and an auxiliary handle for comfortable and secure operation.
  • Cord Management: The appliance includes a cord clip and an access hole to secure the extension cord, preventing accidental disconnection and reducing tension on the power cord connection. This helps to prevent tripping hazards and damage to the cord.
  • Work Area Setup: Operators are advised to designate a clean and well-lit work area, free from children, pets, and utility lines. The extension cord should be routed safely to avoid tripping hazards and potential damage from branches.
  • Cutting Procedures: Specific cutting procedures are outlined to ensure safe and efficient operation. For long branches, cuts should be made incrementally from the end towards the trunk. For thick branches, a three-cut method is recommended to prevent binding and control the fall of the branch. The saw should be running at full speed before starting a cut, and lower branches should be cut first.
  • Kickback Prevention: The manual emphasizes precautions to avoid kickback, which can occur if the guide bar tip touches an object or if the wood pinches the saw chain. Operators are advised to maintain a firm grip, avoid overreaching, and use only manufacturer-specified replacement bars and chains.
  • Vibration Reduction: To mitigate the effects of vibration, users are encouraged to wear suitable gloves, take regular breaks, and maintain the appliance as explained in the manual. The tool should be gripped as lightly as possible while maintaining control.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, the operator should inspect the tool for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, damaged cord/electrical wiring, cracked or broken parts, and the condition of the saw chain (dull or damaged). The saw chain tension and oil level in the reservoir should also be checked.
  • Saw Chain Tensioning: The saw chain tension should be checked before every use, often during the first half hour of use, and periodically during use. A "snap test" is described to determine proper tension, and adjustments are made using the tensioning screw. It is important to let the chain cool before tensioning.
  • Guide Bar Maintenance: The guide bar should be turned over periodically or when replacing the saw chain to distribute wear evenly. The guide bar's groove should be cleaned of sawdust and sap using a bar groove cleaning tool. The guide bar should be replaced if bent, cracked, or excessively worn.
  • Saw Chain Sharpening/Replacement: The saw chain cutters should be sharpened by a qualified technician when the sawdust becomes powder-like, extra force is needed to cut, the saw does not cut straight, or vibration increases. A damaged or worn chain that cannot be restored by sharpening must be replaced.
  • Cleaning After Use: After each use, the drive cover, saw chain, and guide bar should be removed and cleaned of debris, sawdust, and sap. The components should be wiped with a clean cloth and mild soap and water (solvents should not be used, and the tool should not be immersed in liquid). The guide bar and saw chain should be lubricated before reassembly.
  • Storage: When not in use, the pole saw should be stored indoors in a dry, secure location, out of reach of children. The chain cover should be placed over the saw chain, and the saw chain should be left loose during storage.
  • Professional Servicing: Procedures not specifically explained in the manual, such as replacing the drive sprocket or repairing a damaged supply cord, must be performed by a qualified service technician. The manual advises against using damaged equipment and to correct any abnormal noise or vibration before further use.
