Model P3X Model P3X
TOOL DESCRIPTION
The P3X is a high quality, low velocity, automatic tool which can be used to install 8.6mm head drive pins.
The tool can be used with a magazine or as a single-shot tool. Using the magazine, the tool can install pins
in a 10 strip format up to 60mm in total length and, as a single-shot tool, it can install pins up to 70mm in
total length.
Designed for high-speed and repetitive volume applications, the P3X features an automatic .25 caliber disc
load advance system, an engineered plastic, heavy-duty tool body, a rubber handle pad to minimise the
effects of recoil and powder adjustment.
In order to drive the fastener into the base material, the tool operates using the indirect acting piston
principle. The P3X tool uses the impact principle in which an internal drive piston impacts the fastener to
drive it into the base material. With this method, the piston is positioned at the rear of the tool barrel prior to
actuation and is not in contact with the fastener. When the tool is fired, the expanding gasses of an ignited
.25 caliber powder load drive the piston forward in the barrel. As the piston continues its forward travel, it’s
tip impacts the fastener driving it into the base material.
Safety mechanisms incorporated into the tool include:
Free Flight SafetyThe tool can only be fired if the barrel / fastener guide is fully depressed against the
work surface.
Drop Fire SafetyA specially designed sear pin prevents the firing pin from striking the powder load if
the tool is dropped.
Accidental Firing SafetyTwo distinct and separate operations must be performed to actuate the tool.
First, the barrel / fastener guide must be depressed against the work surface; then the trigger must be pulled.
POWER ADJUSTMENT
The power adjustment mechanism of the P3X allows the user to adjust the penetration of the pin through the
fixture ensuring a precise fixing. To operate the power adjustment mechanism, move the regulating wheel
(situated on the housing) in the + or – direction to increase or decrease the power of the tool, thus adjusting
pin penetration.
ADJUST THE DRIVING POWER BY TURNING THE REGULATING WHEEL
Start with minimum power. If the fastener does not penetrate deeply enough, increase the power.

FASTENER FUNCTIONING
Prior to learning the safe operating procedures for this tool, it is important to understand how a powder
actuated fastener works. A powder actuated fastener is considered to be a direct drive or forced entry type
of fastener because it is driven directly into the base material. The driving action causes tremendous forces
to be applied to the fastener. POWERS powder actuated fasteners are specially designed and manufactured
using an austempering process to withstand the forces imposed during the driving operation. Only fasteners
manufactured or supplied by POWERS should be used in this tool.

INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing the POWERS new P3X powder actuated fastening tool with magazine. This tool
will provide you with excellent performance provided the steps for proper operation and maintenance are
followed. Powder actuated fastening systems can provide a cost-effective method of attaching fixtures for
light-duty, static load conditions. The systems provided by POWERS consist of specially designed fasteners,
installation tools and powder loads which are designed to function in combination to provide optimum
performance. While powder actuated tools can provide one of the fastest and economical means of fastening,
they can also be dangerous if they are not operated properly.
Prior to operating the P3X tool, you must be properly trained in the operation of this tool. As part of the
training process, you should read and understand the contents of this Instruction Manual - especially the
safety precautions.
Powder actuated tools may be operated only by properly trained operators as described in AS / NZS
1873.1:2003 Standard, Safety Requirements for Powder Actuated Fastening Systems. For complete tool
operation details, contact your local POWERS branch office or distributor for training.
