Overview

This document is the owner's manual for a Pow'R'kraft 4-Ton Electric Log Splitter, model number PK65556. It provides comprehensive information on the device's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance, along with safety warnings and warranty details.

Function Description:

The Pow'R'kraft 4-Ton Electric Log Splitter is a home-use model designed to split logs. It operates by using a hydraulic system to push a log against a wedge, splitting it into smaller pieces. The device is equipped with a "ZHB" control system that requires both hands for operation: the left hand controls the hydraulic control lever, and the right hand controls the pushbutton switch. The log pusher will only move when both controls are engaged, and it will return to the starting position when both hands release the controls. A trigger-type lock-out device is incorporated to prevent accidental pushdown of the hydraulic control lever, requiring the trigger to be drawn backward with the index finger before pushing the lever forward. The manual emphasizes that the log splitter should not be forced for more than 5 seconds when splitting excessively hard wood, as this can overheat the oil and damage the machine, potentially voiding the warranty. If a log cannot be split after rotating it 90 degrees, it indicates that its hardness exceeds the machine's capacity, and the log should be discarded to protect the splitter.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: PK65556
  • Motor: 1500W, 110 Volt
  • Log Capacity:
    • Diameter: 10" / Most Wood 12" (Note: A small log with knobs or tough fiber can be difficult, while logs with regular fibers exceeding the max diameter might be split.)
    • Length: 20"
  • Splitting Force: 4 ton
  • Hydraulic Pressure: 2320 PSI
  • Hydraulic Oil Capacity: 3.7 qt.
  • Overall Size:
    • Length: 37"
    • Width: 12"
    • Height: 20"
  • Weight: 97 lb.
  • Operating Conditions: Ambient temperatures between 41°F and 104°F, humidity less than 50% at 104°F.
  • Storage/Transport Conditions: Ambient temperatures between -13°F and 131°F.
  • Electrical Requirements: Standard 110 volt electrical supply with protection devices for under-voltage, over-voltage, over-current, and a residual current device (RCD) with a maximum residual current rated at 0.03A.
  • Max Pressure Limiting Screw: Factory-set and sealed to ensure the log splitter operates under pressure no more than 4 tons. Unauthorized adjustment voids the warranty and can cause hydraulic pump failure, leading to serious injury and machine damage.

Usage Features:

  • Setup: The log splitter should be placed on a 23"-30" high, stable, flat, and level workbench. It can be bolted to the work surface if it tends to slip.
  • Bleed Screw: Before operation, the bleed screw must be loosened by a few rotations to allow air to flow in and out of the oil tank smoothly. Airflow through this hole should be detectable during operation. The bleed screw must be tightened before moving the log splitter to prevent oil leakage. Failure to loosen the bleed screw can lead to continuous air compression and decompression, blowing out seals and causing permanent damage.
  • Log Placement: Logs must be set firmly on the log retaining plates and work table, ensuring they will not twist, rock, or slip. Logs should be split in the direction of their growing grain. Do not place logs across the splitter or attempt to split two logs simultaneously, as this can be dangerous and damage the machine.
  • Jammed Log Release: If a log jams, release both controls. Once the log pusher stops at its starting position, insert a wedge wood under the jammed log. Restart the splitter to push the wedge wood further under the jammed log. Repeat with sharper slope wedge woods until the log is freed. Do not attempt to knock the jammed log off, as this can damage the machine or cause an accident.
  • Extension Cords: Minimum cord requirements are specified: 18ga. @ 20ft, 16ga. @ 50ft, 14 ga. @ 75ft, 12ga @ 100ft, 10ga @ 200ft. Connections must be made with protected material suitable for outdoor use.
  • Safety: Always wear safety goggles and protective, non-conductive gloves. Avoid loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair. Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Do not operate under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. Avoid wet or damp areas, rain, and areas with flammable fumes. Keep visitors and children away from the work area. The log splitter should be operated by one person only.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Operation Inspection: Before turning on, check that guards are in place and working, and that keys or adjusting wrenches are removed from the tool area. Replace damaged, missing, or failed parts.
  • Hydraulic Oil Replacement: Replace hydraulic oil every 150 hours of use.
    1. Ensure all moving parts have stopped and the splitter is unplugged.
    2. Unscrew the Oil Drain Bolt with Dipstick.
    3. Turn the log splitter on its support leg side over a 1-gallon container to drain the oil.
    4. Turn the log splitter on its motor side.
    5. Refill with fresh hydraulic oil according to the specified capacity (3.7 qt.).
    6. Clean the dipstick, reinsert it vertically, and check that the oil level is between the two grooves.
    7. Clean and tighten the Oil Drain Bolt before placing the splitter horizontally.
  • Hydraulic Oil Type: Recommended hydraulic oils include SHELL Tellus 22, MOBIL DTE 11, BP Energol HLP-HM 22, or 10W (22-32 ISO Viscosity) Hydraulic Tractor Fluid / Heavy Duty Hydrostatic Oil.
  • Wedge Sharpening: After some use, sharpen the wedge with a fine-toothed file and smooth any burrs or crushed areas along the cutting edge.
  • General Maintenance: Keep the log splitter clean for best and safest performance.
  • Environmental Protection: Take used oil to an authorized collection point; do not discharge into drains, soil, or water.
  • Childproofing: Lock the shop, disconnect master switches, and store the log splitter away from children and unqualified individuals.
