Function Description
The Proscan PDVD1053D is a compact disc player capable of playing various disc types, including DVD, CD-DA, MP3, Kodak Picture CD, CD-R, and CD-RW. It supports MPEG II video compression technology, providing excellent picture resolution of a minimum of 500 lines on screen. The player can output up to 8 language soundtracks, up to 9 views from different camera angles, and up to 32 language subtitles, provided the DVD disc itself supports these features.
The device features a front panel with a disc tray, an Open/Close key, Play/Pause key, Stop key, a remote control sensor, a Power switch key, and a Power Indicator. The rear panel includes a LEFT output jack, a Coaxial digital signal output, a Video output, a Component YUV (Y.Cr.Cb) output, and a RIGHT output jack.
The player operates within the worldwide agreed DVD Regional Code System, meaning it will only operate with discs corresponding to its regional code (Region 1 for this player, covering Canada and USA).
Usage Features
Remote Control Operation:
The player is primarily controlled via a remote control, which transmits a directional infrared beam. It is crucial to aim the remote control directly at the infrared sensor on the unit during operation. Obstacles between the remote control and the sensor, or exposure to direct sunlight or strong artificial light, can interfere with signal reception.

Maintenance Features
General Safety:
- Indoor Use Only: This appliance is not designed for outdoor use.
- Moisture Avoidance: Do not use near water or moisture (e.g., wet basements, swimming pools). If moisture condenses inside the player, remove the disc and leave the unit powered on for one or two hours to dry.
- Ventilation: Ensure ventilation slots are not blocked or covered. Do not place the product on soft surfaces (bed, sofa, rug) or near heat registers. If installed in a bookcase or rack, ensure proper ventilation.
- Power Cord Protection: Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched.
- Cleaning: Clean only with a dry cloth. Do not use thinners, alcohol, chemical solvents, or sprays, as these can permanently damage the disc surface.
- Battery Handling: Do not dispose of batteries as normal rubbish; follow government regulations for disposal. Do not expose batteries to excessive heat.
Disc Care:
- Handling: Hold discs by their outer edge and/or center spindle hole. Avoid touching the disc surface.
- Storage: Store discs vertically in a dry cabinet. Protect from direct sunlight, heat sources, and extreme humidity.
- Cleaning: Clean the disc surface with a soft, dry cleaning cloth, wiping gently and radially from the center toward the outer edge.
Troubleshooting:
The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues:
- No Power: Check power cord connection and main power switch.
- Does Not Play: Ensure a disc is loaded correctly (label side up), the disc's region code matches the player, the disc type is correct, and the disc is not damaged or dirty. Allow time for moisture condensation to dissipate if applicable.
- No Picture: Verify TV power and A/V signal selection. Check system connections and cables for damage. Clean the disc.
- Picture Noise/Distorted: Clean the disc. Reset the player's or TV's color system. Connect the player directly to the TV, bypassing other components like a VCR.
- Picture Not Full Screen: Select the correct screen format from the player's SETUP MENU or the DVD disc menu.
- Malfunction: If the player malfunctions, unplug it for 30 minutes, then power it on to reset.
- Cannot SKIP or SEARCH: Some discs are programmed to restrict skipping or searching in certain sections. Single chapter discs may not support skipping.
- No Sound or Incomplete Sound Output: Check TV and amplifier power and connections. Ensure the correct audio track is selected via the LANGUAGE button. Verify the MUTE function is not activated on the TV or amplifier. Note that there will be no sound during PAUSE, STEP, SLOW, and SEARCH.
- MP3 Disc No Sound or Noisy: If PC program files or other data files are mixed with MP3 files on the same disc, the player might play non-MP3 files with noise. Check if all files on the disc are MP3 files and try skipping files.
- Remote Control Does Not Function: Remove obstacles between the remote control and the player. Point the remote control towards the remote sensor. Check battery polarities and replace batteries if necessary.
