Different unicycle types
The unicycling sport is constantly evolving - and so do the
unicycles continue to develop.
Meanwhile you have several unicycle categories:
racing unicycle
Weight, stiffness and narrow bearing spacing of a racing unicycle
are important. Wheel circumference & crank length are
regulated by the IUF
Long distance
This category has been growing more and more in recent
years. It mainly involves 29“ and 36“ wheels, some of them
with geared hubs, handlebar and brake, partially driven
also off-road.
MountainUnicycle (MUni)
As in cycling, a special form of offroad and trial unicycle has de-
veloped over the years. What the MTB is for
a bicycle, the MUni is for a unicycle. Typicaly,
these are wheels with large-volume studded
tyres that allow good traction but are also the only
suspension or damping in this sport. Beside the „nor-
mal“ Muni you can observe more and more disciplines
with this type of bike: Downhill (24“), Flat (19“), Trial...
Beginners Unicycle / Freestyle Unicycle
The normal unicycle generally has a wheel size of 20“,
well equipped unicycles have a 1.95“ wide tire. This
type of unicycle is used universally. Both amateur
sportsmen, basketball and hockey players use
this machine, but the latter with reinforced
axles. There are differences in the different
materials that determine the quality.
