Overview

The RD432-0 Chemical Controller, also referred to as the IPS M720 pH/ORP Controller, is a device designed for automatic monitoring and management of pH and ORP levels in swimming pools, spas, or circulating water environments. It aims to simplify water balance management through a user-friendly interface.

Function Description:

The controller continuously monitors and displays pH and ORP levels using LEDs and digital readouts on its front panel. It allows for automatic adjustment of chemical feeders to maintain desired water chemistry. When pH or ORP levels deviate from the set points, the controller activates the appropriate chemical feeder for a specified dose time, followed by a delay time. This cycle repeats until the set level is reached. The system includes a flow cell with an integrated flow switch that houses the pH and ORP sensors. The flow switch is a critical safety feature, verifying water flow during a feed cycle and deactivating the feed if water is not flowing. Operation without a functioning flow switch voids the NSF Certification.

  • Dip Switches (1-4):
    • 1: pH/ORP interlock (default: OFF) - No ORP feed if pH is feeding (ON).
    • 2: pH/ORP alert interlock (default: ON) - No ORP if pH is in alert mode (ON).
    • 3: Acid/Base default acid (default: OFF) - Feed base chemical when pH falls below set point (ON); Feed acid chemical when pH is above set point (OFF).
    • 4: Over Timer ON/OFF (default: ON) - Turning off voids NSF Certification.
  • Over Timer:
    • Timed feed: Default 60 cycles, selectable range OFF, 20 – 100 feed cycles. Resets when set level is reached. If preset cycle is reached, pH digital display flashes, pH output relay de-energizes, manual reset required.
    • Continuous feed: Default 60 minutes, selectable range OFF, 20 – 180 minutes. Resets when set level is reached.

Usage Features:

The controller features five function buttons for simple control:

  • Mode: Cycles between Auto, pH Standby, and ORP Standby. In standby, pressing and holding for 3 seconds turns the controller off.
  • Set Level: Adjusts the desired pH or ORP set point.
  • Dose Time: Configures timed or continuous chemical feed modes.
  • Delay Time: Sets the delay period after each dose.
  • pH Cal: Used for pH calibration.
  • Up/Down Buttons: Adjust values for Set Level, Dose Time, Delay Time, and pH Cal.

Operational Modes:

  • Auto Mode: Normal operational mode, allowing full operation and monitoring of both pH and ORP levels. No function pushbuttons are operational in this mode. The red LED next to Auto is illuminated.
  • pH Standby Mode: Green pH standby LED illuminates, both pH and ORP digital displays show dashes, and all Auto functions are disabled. Allows adjustment of pH Set Level, Dose Time, Delay Time, Over Timer, High Alert, Low Alert, and pH Calibration.
  • ORP Standby Mode: Yellow ORP standby LED illuminates, both pH and ORP digital displays show dashes, and all Auto functions are disabled. Allows adjustment of ORP Set Level, Dose Time, Delay Time, Over Timer, High Alert, and Low Alert.

Installation:

The controller and flow cell are factory mounted to an ABS board. Installation involves securing the board to a wall, connecting tubing to the filtration system (downstream from the filter, upstream from chemical introduction points for input, and to a vacuum/reduced pressure point for output), and installing pH and ORP sensors into the flow cell. Electrical connections require a licensed electrician and include connecting pH and ORP feeders, AC power to a GFCI source, and pH and ORP sensors to the controller.

Startup Procedure:

  1. Plug in the controller.
  2. Turn on the filter pump and verify water flow through the flow cell (water should pass over sensors for at least 10 minutes for stable readings).
  3. Check for leaks.
  4. Manually balance pool/spa water using a DPD-based test kit.
  5. Verify the green Flow LED is illuminated (no water flow disables dose outputs).
  6. Enter pH standby mode to select desired pH set level and dose time, then calibrate pH using water from the flow cell's sample port.
  7. Enter ORP standby mode to select desired ORP set level and dose time.
  8. Return to Auto mode.

Shutdown Procedure:

  1. Enter pH standby mode.
  2. Press and hold the Mode pushbutton for 2 seconds until both pH and ORP digital displays read OFF.
  3. Release the Mode pushbutton.

Maintenance Features:

  • Winterizing: Turn off the controller, remove pH and ORP sensors, fill protective caps with water, re-install on sensors, and store in a warm location. Drain water from the flow cell.
  • Sensor Cleaning: Sensor tips should be cleaned regularly (1-3 months for commercial, 3-6 months for residential).
    1. Turn off the controller.
    2. Close valves at the bottom of the flow cell.
    3. Loosen nut fitting and gently remove the sensor.
    4. Swirl the sensor tip for 5 seconds in Muriatic acid or white vinegar, then rinse with water (do not touch or brush the tip).
    5. For commercial pools/spas, every 3rd cleaning, swirl in liquid soap and water solution, then rinse.
    6. Gently re-insert the sensor and hand tighten the nut fitting.
  • Factory Defaults Reset: Place the controller in pH Standby Mode, turn off by holding Mode, then press and hold Set Level and pH Cal while pressing Mode. The pH display will show "Ld" and the software version in the ORP window. Return to full operation by turning off and on the controller with the Mode pushbutton.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides guidance for various issues, including:

  • pH level too low/high or Alert LED on (checking set level, dose time, chemical feeder, sensor, alkalinity, calibration).
  • Chlorine/Bromine level too low/high or Alert LED on (checking pH level, ORP set level, controller undershooting/overshooting, chlorine supply, chemical check valve/injector, chemical feed pump, sensor).
  • Display and LEDs off (checking power supply, circuit breaker, controller fuse).
  • Feeder not operating (checking Flow LED status).
  • Flow LED off (checking valves, line pressure, flow switch connection).
