RFinterference
Certainthird-partye xternalelectricalequipmentcancauseRadioFrequency(RF)interferencewith
GNSS(GPS),AISorVHFdevices,iftheexternalequipmentisnotadequatelyinsulatedandemits
excessivelevelsofelectromagneticinterference(EMI).
SomecommonexamplesofsuchexternalequipmentincludeLEDlighting(e.g.:navigationlights,
searchlightsandļ¬oodlights,interiorandexteriorlights)andterrestrialTVtuners.
Tominimizeinterferencefromsuchequipment:
ā¢KeepitasfarawayfromGNSS(GPS),AISorVHFproductsandtheirantennasaspossible.
ā¢Ensurethatanypowercablesforexternalequipmentarenotentangledwiththepowerordata
cablesforthesedevices.
ā¢Considerļ¬ttingoneormorehighfrequencysuppressionferritestotheEMI-emittingdevice.The
ferrite(s)shouldberatedtobeeffectiveintherange100MHzto2.5GHz,andshouldbeļ¬tted
tothepowercableandanyothercablesexitingtheEMI-emittingdevice,ascloseaspossibleto
thepositionwherethecableexitsthedevice.
Compasssafedistance
Topreventpotentialinterferencewiththevessel'smagneticcompasses,ensureanadequate
distanceismaintainedfromtheproduct.
Whenchoosingasuitablelocationfortheproductyoushouldaimtomaintainthemaximumpossible
distancefromanycompasses.Typicallythisdistanceshouldbeatleast1m(3.3ft)inalldirections.
Howeverforsomesmallervesselsitmaynotbepossibletolocatetheproductthisfarawayfroma
compass.Inthissituation,whenchoosingtheinstallationlocationforyourproduct,ensurethatthe
compassisnotaffectedbytheproductwhenitisinapoweredstate.
GNSS(GPS)locationrequirements
Inadditiontogeneralguidelinesconcerningthelocationofmarineelectronics,thereareanumberof
environmentalfactorstoconsiderwheninstallingequipmentwithaninternalGNSSreceiver.
