•Toensureaccuracy,waterconditionsshouldbe
calmwithzerotideandzerocurrent.
•Youwillneedtocalibrateeachcalibrationspeed
point,startingwiththelowest
1.Incalmconditionswithzerotideandzerocurrent,
runyourvesselatasteadyspeed,approximately
thatoftheselectedcalibrationspeed,overa
measureddistance.
Makeanoteof:
•Themeasureddistanceinnauticalmiles
•Thecurrentspeedvalueinknots
•Thetimeinminutesittakestocoverthe
measureddistance
2.Calculatetheactualspeedoverthemeasured
distanceusingthecalculation:(Speed=(60x
Distance)/Time)The‘60’isusedtoensurethe
calculationisinminutesratherthanhoursor
tenthsofanhour.
e.g.Distance=14nauticalmiles,Time=105
minutes(1hour45minutes)so:
•S=(60xD)/T
•S=(60x14)/105
•S=840/105
•S=8Kts
3.Ifthecalculatedspeedis:
•Thesameasthecurrentspeed,(notedduring
theSpeedRunCalibration)thenthecalibration
iscorrectatthisspeedsonoactionisrequired.
•Notthesameasthecurrentspeed.Calculate
anew,correctedCalibrationFactor,asfollows:
