This document is the owner's manual for the RedGum Chipper Shredder, specifically models powered by the Honda GX200 engine. It provides comprehensive information on the device's function, safety, operation, and maintenance.
Function Description:
The RedGum Chipper Shredder is a robust machine designed for processing organic material. Its primary function is to chip branches and shred leaves, twigs, and grass, converting them into smaller, more manageable mulch. This process helps in waste reduction, garden maintenance, and creating compostable material. The machine features two distinct intake points for different types of material: an upper hopper for shredding smaller, softer material and a side chute for chipping larger, harder branches.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Engine: Honda GX200 (engine type may vary for illustration purposes).
- Chipping Capacity (Side Chute): Up to 75mm (approximately 3 inches) in diameter for branches.
- Shredding Capacity (Upper Hopper): Leaves, twigs, and foliage up to 1cm (approximately 0.4 inches) thick.
- Recommended Oil Type: SAE 10W30 for Honda engines.
- Components:
- Upper Hopper (1): For material less than 10mm diameter to be shredded.
- Handles (2): For easy maneuverability.
- Storage Compartment (3).
- Side Chute Chipping Tube (4): For material up to 75mm diameter to be chipped.
- Wheels (5): For easy maneuverability.
- Rear Wheel Axle (6).
- Front Support Legs (7).
- Discharge Chute (8).
- Engine (9).
- Belt & Pulley Cover (10).
- Blade Cover (11).
- Chipper Body (12).
Usage Features:
The RedGum Chipper Shredder is designed for ease of use while emphasizing safety.
- Operation Modes:
- Chipping Branches (Side Chute): For branches up to 75mm. The engine should be at optimum revs (lever towards the rabbit icon). Branches are fed into the side chipping tube. Thicker branches require slower feeding. A tool (e.g., wooden stick) should be used to push the last branch through, never hands. The side chipping tube should be covered when not in use.
- Shredding Leaves & Grass (Upper Hopper): For leaves, twigs, and foliage up to 1cm thick. The engine should also be at optimum revs. Material is fed into the upper hopper, ensuring the plastic cover remains closed during operation to prevent flying chips. The operator must keep their face and body away from the feed hopper to avoid kickback.
- Safety Precautions: The manual highlights numerous safety warnings, including:
- Never allow hands, feet, or any body part into the hopper or discharge chute while the machine is running.
- Do not peer into openings.
- Avoid metal or hard objects.
- Keep children, pets, and bystanders at least 10 meters away.
- Never operate in enclosed areas due to carbon monoxide risk.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (ear protection, safety goggles, gloves) and avoid loose clothing or long jewelry.
- Ensure the machine is on a level surface and the operator area is clear.
- Check wind direction to avoid working downwind of exhaust.
- Handle fuel carefully: refuel outdoors, with the engine off and cool, and never smoke.
- Always ensure guards and deflectors are in place and in good condition.
- Mobility: Equipped with wheels and handles, the chipper shredder can be moved by firmly holding the handles, stepping on the rear wheel axle, and leaning the machine backward.
- Clog Prevention and Clearing: Do not allow processed material to build up in the discharge zone to prevent kickback. If clogging occurs, turn off the chipper and clear debris only after the engine has stopped.
- Adjustable Output: The discharge screen can be removed to increase output and produce coarser material. For finer material, refeed into the upper hopper or refit the screen.
Maintenance Features:
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the RedGum Chipper Shredder.
- General Maintenance:
- Always turn off the engine, ensure all moving parts have stopped, and allow the machine to cool before any servicing or storage.
- Store the machine away from open flames or sparks. For long-term storage, drain the fuel.
- Refer to the Honda GX200 engine manual for specific engine maintenance.
- Blade Replacement:
- Dull blades reduce chipping speed.
- To replace: Turn off the engine, remove the spark plug cover, the blade cover (11), and fully open the discharge chute (8). Remove the discharge screen.
- Wear safety gloves. Rotate the blade tray to align blades for access.
- Remove the two location screws on the blade, noting each blade has one cutting edge.
- Replace with new blades, tighten screws, and reassemble covers and screen.
- Belt Tension Adjustment:
- The 'V' belt (10) connecting the engine to the blade tray can lose tension over time.
- To adjust: Turn off the engine, remove the belt cover. Loosen the four engine location nuts. Move the engine forward until the 'V' belt is tight. Ensure the main pulley and affiliated pulley are in the same plane. Tighten the engine location nuts and replace the belt cover.
- V-Belt Replacement:
- Turn off the engine and remove the belt cover (10).
- Remove the old belt.
- Place the new belt on the main pulley first (on the engine) and then on the affiliated pulley beside the blade tray.
- Adjust tension if needed (refer to belt tension adjustment steps). Replace the belt cover.
- Maintenance Schedule: The manual includes a detailed maintenance schedule for various components, specifying inspection, cleaning, replacement, or adjustment intervals (e.g., pre-delivery, first service, dealer service, or every time the machine is used). This covers items like the complete unit, on/off switch, choke/primer, engine oil, fuel filter, air filter, spark plug, belts, blades, and all screws, nuts, and linkage.
- Warranty Information: The product comes with a warranty provided by The RedShed, covering defects due to manufacturer fault. Warranty periods are 24 months for private/domestic use and 3 months for commercial use for RedGum Splitters, and 12 months for private/domestic use and 3 months for commercial use for RedGum Chippers. Engine warranty is covered by the respective original equipment manufacturer. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, misuse, neglect, incorrect adjustments, stale/contaminated fuel, or unauthorized alterations. Customers are responsible for providing proof of purchase and maintaining the product as per the manual. Warranty repairs must be carried out by an authorized RedGum Dealer.
