Die Consolidated
B-24
„Liberator
war der am
meisten
produzierte Bomber im zweiten Weltkrieg aber
trotzdem
stand er
immer
in der
Öffentlichkeit
im Schatten der bekannteren Boeing
B-17
Flying Fortress.
Entwïckelt
wurde die B-24 auf der aerodynamischen Basis eines innovativen Flugbootes CM 31 der Firma
Consolidated die bis dahin besonders
durch
den Entwurf und Bau des Flugboots PBY Catalina bekannt gewor-
den war. Neben
dem
Cockpit und
dem
doppelten Seitenleitwerk war es vor allen Dingen die Tragflache
mit'
ihrem
neuen
revolutioneren
Profil - die „Davis Wing" die
züm
Herzstück des neuen
Bombers
wurde. Auf Grund
ihrer völlig neuen aerodynamischen Auslegung war die B-24 in der Lage die gleiche
Bombenladung
mit einer
wesentlich
höheren Geschwindigkeit
über
eine weitere Strecke zu
befördem
als dies der B-17
möglich
war.
Die Ereignisse in Europa führten im September 1939 dazu, daB die französische und die britische Luftwaffe
verzweifelt nach modernen Flugzeugen suchte. Eine der völlig neuen Maschinen war der. noch ohne
Typenbezeichnung existierende Bomber von Consolidated. Nach dem Auftrag über 60 Maschinen mit einer
Option auf weitere 120 Flugzeuge erhielt die Maschine die Bezeichnung LB - 30MF (Land Bomber, 30
für
die
Export Nummer
und
MF
für Mission Francais). Noch bevor die erste Maschine ausgeliefert werden konnte kapit-
uliërte
Frankreich und die britische Luftwaffe
übernahm
die französischen Auftrage als LB-30A Liberator.
Eine wesentliche
Neuerung
der Liberator war die Unterbringung des Treibstoffs in den Tragflachen und nicht in
gesonderten Behaltern. Dazu wurde das Innere der Tragflache mit
einem Dichtungsmittel
ausgestrichen. Gerade
dieser Punkt war es aber schlieBlich der bei der britischen Luftwaffe auf eine Ablehnung der Liberator für den
Bomber-Einsatz
führte, da man einen nicht selbst-dichtenden Tank für absolut unakzeptabel für ein Einsatze in
Europa erachtete. So gingen die Liberator
an
das
Küstenkommando
für Langstrecken - Aufklarung. Die ersten
sechs LB-30A wurden zu Transportern
umgebaut
und flogen im Einsatz bei der britischen Airline BOAC. (British
Overseas Airline Corporation.). - Die erste
Bomberversion
der nun als B-24 bezeichneten Maschinewar die
Liberator II für die britische Luftwaffe. Sie erhielt auch als erste die Verlangerung des vorderen Rumpfteils urn
0,91
m.
Dies war keineswegs aus technischen
Gmnden
erforderlich, sondern erfolgte einzig und allein aus
asthetischen
Gründen
- dem Konstrukteuer und Consolidated-Eigner Reuben
Fleet
war die Maschine zu stup-
pig!
- Mit der
B-24D
für die amerikanische Luftwaffe USAAF ging die
Liberator
zum ersten
Mai
in die
Massenproduktion. Durch zahireiche
Anderungen,
darunter auch die neuen
Prat&
Whitney R-1830-43 Motoren
mit Turbolader, erhielt die Maschine ihr charakteristisches Aussehen. - Besonders bekannt wurde die
B-24D
Liberator
durch
einen Einsatz gegen die
rumanischen Erdölfelder
in Ploesti, in der
Nahe
von Bukarest. Dazu
starteten am 1. August 1943 die Maschinen von
fiinf
in Nordafrika stationierten Bomber Groups im Tieffllug
(maximale Höhe 100
m!)
zu ihrem
Ziel.
Von den 164 Maschinen
kamen
nur 88 Liberator wieder zu ihren Basen
zurück. - Die Liberator mit dem
Namen
„The Squaw" war eine dwer Maschinen die den
Ploesti-Raid
überlebte.
Sie wurde kurz darauf aus dem Einsatz gezogen und in die Vereinigten Staaten geschickt urn für die Zeichnung
von
KriegsanJeihen
zu werben. Für diesen Zweck erhielt sie neben einer Landkarte mit ihren Einsatzorten auch
spezielle Markierungen an den Stellen, wo sie wahrend ihrer Einsatze Treffer erhalten hatte.

The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was the most built bomber of the Second World War, but despite that it was
always overshadowed in the eyes of the public by the better-known Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress.
The B-24 was developed on the aerodynamic basis of an innovative flying boat, the CM 31 made by
Consolidated who had up to then been particularly known for the design and construction of the PBY Catalina
flying boat. In addition to the cockpit and the double vertical tail unit, it was above all the wings with their rev-
olutionary new profile, the "Davis Wing", that was the heart of the new bomber. Due to its completely new
aerodynamics the B-24 was capably of carrying the same bomb load as the B-17 at a much higher speed and
for a longer distance.
In September 1939 the events in Europe caused the French and British air forces to go desperately in search of
new aircraft. One of the completely new machines was the existing Consolidated bomber that as yet had no
type designation. After an order had been received for 60 machines with the option of a further 120, the air-
craft was given the designation LB-30MF (land bomber, 30 for the export number and MF for French Mission).
Even before the first machines could be delivered the French capitulated and the RAF took over the French
orders as
the
LB-30A
Liberator.
An essential innovation in the Liberator was the accommodation of the fuel in the wings and not in separate
tanks.
To do this the inside of the wing was coated with a sealant. However it was ultimately this very point
that led the RAF to turn down the Liberator for
bombing
missions, as they considered a tank that was not self-
contained to be absolutely unacceptable for use in Europe. Thus the Liberator was allocated to Coastal
Command for long-range reconnaissance. The first six
erf
the LB-30A were converted to transport and flew with
the British airline BOAC (British Overseas Airline Corporation).
The first bomber version for the RAF, that was now designated the B-24, was the Liberator II. It was also the
first to have the front part of the fuselage extended by 0.91
m.
This was in no way needed for technical rea-
sons,
but was done solely on aesthetic grounds - in the eyes of the designer and owner of Consolidated,

the machine looked too blunt-nosed!
The Liberator went into mass production for the first time as the
B-24D
for the USAAF. Following numerous
modifications,
including
the new Pratt
&
Whitney R-1830-43 engines with turbo-supercharger, the aircraft
received its characteristic appearance.
The
B-24D
Liberator was particularly famous for its strike against the Ploesti oil fields near Bucharest. On
1st
August 1943 aircraft from five bomber groups stationed in North Africa flew low over their target (max.
alti-
tude 100
m!).
Of these 164 aircraft only 88 Liberators came back to base.
A Liberator nicknamed "The Squaw" was one of the survivors of the Ploesti
raid.
Shortly after that it was retired
from service and sent to the USA in order to solicit war loans. For this purpose, in addition to a land map with
its missions shown on it, it was given special markings at the places where it had been hit while in action.
