ERROR A071
ERROR CODE DIAGNOSTICS
EXPLANATION
Gas Air ratio valve malfunction.
If the flame rod is detecting a flame for 8
seconds when the water heater is turned
off, the water heater displays the “A071”
error code on the User Interface.
Diagnostic check items
Flame rod
Gas-air ratio valve
Turn Power OFF
Remove connector “C” and “H” terminal on
flame rod, and reinsert them.
Turn power ON and operate unit.
Unit had a loose connection or
foreign debris that is no longer
present.
Until appears to be operating OK.
In 10 seconds intervals, cycle unit 3
times by turning unit:
ON-OFF; ON-OFF; ON-OFF
Disconnect wires at flame rod(s).
While viewing burner chamber
through sight glass:
In 10 second intervals, cycle unit 3
times by turning unit:
ON-OFF; ON-OFF; ON-OFF
Operate unit.
If error code “A071” appears:
Replace control board.
Clean flame rod.
If the error code “A071” appears
after cleaning flame rod:
Replace flame rod.
Replace control board
Access maintenance mode to check flame
rod status.
Locate sight glass.
While viewing burner chamber through sight
glass: In 10 seconds intervals, cycle unit 3
times - ON-OFF; ON-OFF; ON-OFF
Operate unit.
If the error code “A071” appears and flame is
visible while unit has been OFF longer than 5
seconds:
Replace Gas-Air-ratio valve.
Did error code
A071” appear?
Is flame visible
when OFF?
Does “flame rod status” in
maintenance mode
indicate presence of flame
while unit has been off
>5 seconds?
Does “flame rod status” in
maintenance mode
indicate presence of flame
while unit has been off

Flame Rod
Go to STATUS mode and use the [up] or
[down] to TANKLESS STATUS, and press
ENTER.
Use the “” or “” to FLAME ROD STA-
TUS while the unit is operating.
WARNING: When cleaning or replacing the
flame rod/igniter rod, you must replace the
gasket with the Rheem approved gasket (a
spare gasket is provided with the unit). Im-
proper sealing of the flame rod/igniter rod due
to a damaged or missing gasket can cause
unsafe operation or damage the OHL.
