Term
Explanation
Aliquot
A portion aspirated from a primary sample scheduled for a specific
analytical test or group of tests.
Analyzer device / system
Lab device or system which analyses samples.
Application volume
The volume dispensed into a secondary tube by the aliquoter system.
Background program
A program that runs in the background, transparently and without
interaction from the user.
Back-up
Organizational procedures for saving files and programs to another
storage location. Thus, one version of the files is always available.
Barcode printer
Printer to print barcode labels.
Barcode scanner
Device for reading and identifying the barcodes on primary and
secondary tubes.
Barcode type
Different ways of encoding information as a barcode symbol.
Batch script
Similar to a shell script. A readable text file which contains a
sequence of system commands. A batch or shell script can also use
control loops and query mechanisms.
Boot partition
Physical section of the hard disk reserved for booting routines of the
computer.
Clot
Contamination, soiling or clumping in a fluid system.
Clot detection
System for recognizing blood clumps.
Communication program
Program responsible for communicating between the system and
another data processing system (e.g., lab host).
Compressor
A device that produces compressed air.
Configuration file
File which contains the configuration data.
Control software
Software used to control the instrument.
Control unit / computer
Computer hosting the control software.
Coordinates
Position defined by three axes.
Cursor
A flashing symbol on the monitor that marks the current entry
position.
Cursor keys
Special arrow keys to move the cursor on the screen.
Customer system
Pre-installed system with specific settings for the customer.
Data backup
Organizational procedure to copy data and programs to another
memory unit to ensure that a copy is available.
Data record
Set of related data handled as a unit by logical criteria.
Data transmission
Transfer of data between two or more data terminals, independent of
their distance.
Database
A structured system of related files to describe, store and recover
great amounts of data, which are used by several application
programs.
Dead volume
Fluid that is aspirated in excess to ensure correct pipetting and
discarded with the disposable tip after dispensing of the application
volume.
Default rack
The work area where the incorrect or error tubes are sorted.
