Updating the System Software
From time to time Roland will issue updates to the operating system for the VS-880EX. These updates are
provided for a variety of reasons such as providing compatibility with external SCSI devices, software
programs, and/or adding additional features that make your VS-880EX even more valuable and useful
than it already is. These updates come in one of two formats: as Standard MIDI Files or on a Zip disk. You
can order the updates from the Roland Customer Service department (323-890-3700, x2289) or, in most
cases, you can download them directly from the Roland U.S. Website (www.rolandus.com).
Updating the VS-880EX with Standard MIDI Files
System updates for the VS-880EX are divided into 16 separate MIDI files (Mac or PC format). You will
need the following tools to update the VS-880EX with MIDI files:
• MIDI sequencer (software or hardware) that can load Standard MIDI Files
• MIDI cable
• VS-880EX
• VS-880EX System Software update disk(s)
Update Procedure
1. Connect the MIDI OUT port of the sequencer to the MIDI IN port of the VS-880EX.
2. Hold the channel 7 [CH EDIT] and [STATUS] buttons while powering on the VS-880EX.
“System Update?” will be displayed.
3. Press [YES] and “Waiting MIDI EX” will be displayed.
4. Load the Standard MIDI Files into your sequencer. If your sequencer can only load one song
at a time, load “880EX_01.MID” first.
5. Play all 16 MIDI files in order, starting with “880EX_01.MID” and ending with
“880EX_16.MID.” After all the MIDI files have been played into the VS-880EX, “Update
SysPRG?” will be displayed.
6. Press [YES] and “Please Reboot OK” will be displayed. The system software of the VS-880EX
has now been updated.
7. Restart the VS-880EX by turning the power off and then on again. The new system version
will be displayed as the VS-880EX is booting up.
Only the first three digits of the system software are displayed during the bootup
procedure. To see the full system version, hold the channel 8 [CH EDIT] and
[STATUS] buttons while powering on the VS-880EX. Then, when you are finished,
turn the power off and then on again to return to the normal operating mode.
