Chapter 2: Understanding Your VS-880EX
INPUT Mode
When the [FADER/EDIT] button is lit orange, the [CH EDIT] and [STATUS] buttons are used to route the
Input signal (rear panel of the VS-880EX) to the desired recording Track (1 – 8). Any Input (1 - 8) can be
assigned to record to any Track (1 - 8). In other words, Input 2 could be assigned to record on Track 5. That
Track is automatically routed to its corresponding mixer channel (Track 1 > Mixer channel 1, Track 2 >
Mixer channel 2, etc.) for playback. Therefore, if we’re recording a signal that is coming in from Input 2
and we’re recording it onto Track 5, the channel 5 fader will be the fader you use to adjust playback
volume. The faders can be used to control the level of the input sources. Faders 1-6 control the analog
inputs and faders 7 and 8 control the digital inputs.
Many DAT machines can be used as an analog to digital converter. Plug a microphone or
line level instrument into your DAT machine’s analog audio input and connect the digital
output of the DAT to the VS-880EX digital input. You will probably have to put the DAT in
Record/Pause mode to have the audio pass through it without recording. Check your DAT manual.
Of course, you can also use an external analog to digital converter to accomplish this as well.
TRACK Mode
When the [FADER/EDIT] button is lit green, the faders are used to control the levels of the recorded
tracks. The [CH EDIT] buttons are used to access the track parameters (such as effects sends and EQ) and
the [STATUS] buttons can be used in combination with the [CH EDIT] buttons to route the recorded tracks.
The audio recorded on the Tracks, after the EQ, Fader, and Pan, can be routed to the MIX bus for
monitoring, or to any of the record buses. Routing the Track(s) to a record bus is a simple way to merge
Tracks or record the output of effects devices to a Track.
RETURN Mode
When the [FADER/EDIT] button is lit red, the faders 7 and 8 are used to control the level of the EFFECT 1
and EFFECT 2 returns. You can also designate any inputs as the Stereo In and control the level of the Stereo
In with fader 6. This is convenient if you are linking multiple VS-880EX’s together and want to route the
audio from one machine to the master output of the other without using any tracks. You can also use the
[CH EDIT] buttons and the [STATUS] buttons to route the output of the effects processors and the Stereo In
to the tracks for recording. This is great for recording effects such as reverbs and delays.
Use the [FADER/EDIT] button to switch back and forth (toggle) between INPUT Mode, TRACK Mode,
and RETURN mode. You are essentially accessing three different mixers with the same set of physical
controls (sliders, knobs, buttons, etc.)
